Woven Spear Amulet

A Wheat Weave is a decorative are ornament
often seen on door posts, windows, shelves.
They many take the shape of Maidens
or knots of various shapes and sizes.
The Woven Spear is a specific form of the weave
comprised of two strands in a braid trailing down
from a top point
and is considered a symbol of fertility.
More commonly seen as stalks of wheat in a tight weave
that broadens at the base.
The Wheat Weave is often used as a house hold blessing.

Woven Spear Amulet

Woven Spear Amulet
An Amulet of Fertility

Fertility was a desired force
harnessed in the Old Religions
due to the high rate of disease and death
during childbirth
accidents
and the tragedy of war.
Fertility was important for producing babies,
crops and farm animals.

In modern times,
fertility may seem like an “unwanted” force of nature
to those who are conscious of their family size
and caution of unwanted birth;
however fertility may be focused on one’s income
and the bounty of harvest of other kinds.
For the artist,
writer or musician
fertility has a direct relationship
to the production of their craft.
A fertile mind
will yield the needed song or story,
inspire the perfect painting
or sculpture
or even an idea
to change one’s life for the better.

In the spirit of “making things happen”,
I have created the Woven Spear Amulet. Like the Wheat Weaving of old,
it is a braid of strands that from a pointed top,
then appears to be of three strands
resolving into two points at the bottom:
the weave is a continuous strand.
Like most Celtic Knot Work, the piece may be used in meditation:
by following the strand with the eye,
one sees how the complicated pattern is a single strand,
like life itself.

For those who like the amulet
one may also purchase a matching pair of earrings of the Woven Spear.

This is for those who are looking to increase their objectives
whether it is of tangible material or inspiration.

My First Comission

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on June 16, 2010
Posted in: Custom Jewelry, Jewelry design. Tagged: Amulets by Merlin, Custom Jewelry. 2 Comments

It is a question I have been asked a few times:
“Why have you chosen to focus on Custom Jewelry?.
It would be easier to be a stone setter, fabricator
or simply reproduce stock items,
why bother to continually make new designs?”

Scrying Hands Ring

Scrying Hands Ring

In 1970 I was introduced to the jeweler’s bench
where I was taught the basics in fabrication
then given assignments to “reproduce” other works,
yet not to “copy” them
but encouraged to embellish on the designs,
to add my own touch of line and form.
From these experiences I learned the craft
but also to respect the work of other artists.

I began my business in the mid ’80s
my primary intent was to develop a new Tarot Deck,
not as paintings or drawings
but as tiny sculpture that may be dropped and read.
Towards the end of the decade,
I began to show my work at Renaissance Fairs
and other art shows.
I then discovered the jewelry being made in America
was becoming anemic.
In other words
a practice of steeling designs from artisans
was becoming more and more common.
Before the practice of “out sourcing” became the rage in the United States,
people were purchasing copies of jewelry
shipping them over seas for folks to pull molds
and reproduce them.
Particularly common on the west coast
(where I was living at the time)
even other jewelry designers were creating
“Knock Offs” (Direct copies)
of each others work.
This corrupted the Jewelry industry in the states to such a degree
many Jewelers retired or quit out of frustration.

“Why bother?” one fellow told me.
“If I spend all my time and effort to create something new
only to find hordes of copies of my own work within a few months
for less than I can produce it,
it would be better for me to simply quit.”

Many did.
To this day stores have found that it is cheaper to purchase knock offs
from overseas
than to purchase the designs from the original artist.
Indeed,
should a jeweler try to sell his
(or her)
work to stores
the first question is:
“How much a gram?”

The result in this country is obvious.
The jewelry industry has moved into an over seas industry.
Our designers are fewer than ever
and the stores are selling the same pieces they were forty years ago:
the same girl in the moon,
the same pentacle and so on.

In my youth I met a fellow who had designed a moccasin sold at the Renaissance Faire:
the founder of Bald Mountain Moccasin.
He developed a technique in the creation of his footwear
that was unique
and I marveled at his ingenuity and craftsmanship.
“Aren’t you afraid of getting ripped off?” I asked him.
“It is going to happen.” He told me.
“Not all merchants and craftsman have scruples.
So what I do is to continually create something new
so as I get ripped off
I have a dozen new things to offer,
always ahead of the thieves.”

That really hit me with both barrels.
As an artist I am always concerned of the Knock Off,
being as I saw many of my contemporaries quitting
to be truck drivers and other professions
because of theft.
However I have kept those words in my mind for many years.

My solution was to re-focus my work on developing jewelry
people want
by asking them up front:
“If you cold have the piece you really want,
what would it be?”

The results have been staggering.
The first time I made something for a client
they designed themselves was overwhelming for us both:
she had a vision two hands holding a stone as a ring,
like scrying into a crystal ball.
I took pictures of her hands to make it very personal.
I carved the piece and cast it,
set the stone and presented it to her.
After a few tears she told me she had dreamed of the ring
and this was her dream come true.
Then blessed me with permission to reproduce it,
the Scrying Hands Ring
became one of the first rings in my Line of Jewelry.

Since then I have created custom pieces,
some became a part of my line (with permission)
other one-of-a-kind pieces with no photographs and sketches destroyed
(by request of the client).
My line of jewelry has grown to well over 400 different designs,
most available to the public,
some are specially made for other distributors,
companies or religious organizations.
However I continue to expand my own line
to “stay ahead” of the knock offs.

I still make each piece I sell
including the Tarot and Rune sets.
Only when the sculpture becomes of a size
do I seek help from a foundry.
I have created replicas from time to time,
but only by actually re-carving the design
rather than pulling a mold from another’s work,
this way it may look much like the museum piece,
but it has it’s own look,
feel and size:
still an original work of art.

If you are interested in having something made that is unique,
or a limited run for you and your friends;
perhaps you own a store and want something that only you carry,
I look forward to creating your custom jewelry for you.

The Knotted Star Amulet

Pentacles are symbols of balance and unity.
As mentioned in other articles,
I have described the five points as elements in the lower four points and the top point as spirit.
This illustrates a healthy balance of head, heart and spirit.
This Pentacle extends balance into Grace,
for it is not enough just to live a life in balance,
by adding a “swing” to one’s step,
you move from simply walking your path,
you begin to dance.

The Knotted Star Amulet

The Knotted Star Amulet

In Celtic Knot Work
designs develop a new way of viewing the image.
By tracing the strand from the top point around the star
and concluding at the beginning
may be used as a meditation:
reminding the viewer
although the piece looks as if it is comprised of five sections,
it is still a single image.

When we study difficult ideas
it is a common step to break it down into its elements,
learn those parts and when assembling them we are able to understand
and utilize the the entire piece.
Much like learning a piece of music,
we break it down to various sections,
practice the bits until mastered
then play it as a single piece of music.
The Knotted Star Amulet is similar to the other pentacles
it represents the study of the human experience from five different perspectives
and yet is of a single piece.
This is a Dancer’s Pentacle,
the Musician’s Pentacle,
a Pentacle that holds all of the best qualities of Life with “style”.

The Harm Bracelet

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on June 11, 2010
Posted in: Bracelets, Humor. Tagged: ax bracelet, Charm Bracelet, harm bracelet, Pensic, SCA, sword bracelet, sword jewelry, weapon jewelry. Leave a comment

When on the circuit
I spent a lot of time with the Society of Creative Anachronisms (SCA).
The SCA is an international group developed to preserve the arts and sciences of the medieval period,
like a “living museum” demonstrating calligraphy,
Music and even combat.

Harm Bracelet

The Harm Bracelet

To create jewelry that these folks were interested in,
I made crowns, necklaces and other “period” pieces
as well as a series of small weapons to be worn as charms,
earrings and other jewelry.
After some time had passed
I looked down at my cases and mused
if I was to create a charm bracelet with sword and ax,
I could call it a “Harm Bracelet”.
I was surprised at the response:
a great deal of laughter!
Every now and again I make one and set it out in the cases more as a conversation piece,
but the folks kept buying them!

Now, it has been well over ten years since I attended Pensic
(their giant East Coast gathering of the many Kingdoms
to do great battle on the field by day and brag about their prowess at night!)
I was going over my work to see what I may have over looked.
Lo and Behold, the Harm Bracelet was shining at me!

And so, after many years of slumber,
the Harm Bracelet is again available through Amulets by Merlin.

The Harm Bracelet is a sterling chain with a series of weapons:
the Sun Sword, the Mace, the Morning Star,
and various axes:
all soldered to the chain with a lobster clasp for security.
Each bracelet is made for the person who ordered it,
so you have the ability to “customize it” should you wish for modifications.

The Harm Bracelet
is for those who wish to make a statement: “I am Armed!”

Mirth the Dragon Amulet

After the creation of Song the Dragon, I asked Tony to “scribble” (that’s what she calls it) out another dragon design. Because of the kind of detail in her dragons, the “scribbling” quickly is recognizable as scales, accenting the dragon’s features. The one she drew next was a wide winged beast with trailing mustache and a delightful grin.

Mirth the Dragon Amulet

Mirth the Dragon Amulet

“There” she told me. “This one is laughing;” and so it was. I had to chuckle just to see it floating on the page. As I created the amulet I had to laugh, it seemed to change characters as it progressed. I use a sculpting technique that is unusual in the creation of amulets, I utilize a softer wax so it my bend and extrude much like clay does. Hence much of my work tend to look more fluid and the design process continues as it is developed. In this case the face kept changing from recognizable as people I knew: all laughing as I sculpted.

To finish the piece, I added a bail behind the head, this way the dragon hovers on the chain or cord, looking very much lit it is flying on the breast of the person wearing it. If you look closely, there is in the scales Tony’s signature – but it is tiny! I added my own signature on the back, so like the Song Dragon and the Baby Dragon, Mirth the Dragon is developed from one of M’Lady Tony’s Dragon designs.

The amulet is for those who wish to share good times and a delightful sense of humor: a laughing dragon indeed! If you wish to get yours, please visit my Mirth the Dragon Amulet Page.

Stag and Doe Wedding Rings

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on June 7, 2010

More often than not,
folks who want wedding rings want something special,
something that would be uniquely their own.
When a couple contacted me a bit ago,
they were looking for someone who could create rings they designed themselves.

Stag and Doe Wedding Rings

Stag and Doe Wedding Rings

After approaching the larger companies and corporate jewelry stores,
they found the “custom” typically means “choose a shank,
setting and stone” from a catalog.
They were refereed to me by a good friend for whom I had created several pieces in the past.
After I received sketches over the internet with detailed telephone conversation and emails
I began the rendering process: developed their sketches into several versions
until we struck on a combination between what they wanted and what was physically possible.

The goal was to create a pair of rings of a stag and doe facing each other
with a diamond between them.
Because they wanted something that would last a long time,
they decided on an “etched” look rather than an embossed. The “etched” images of the deer
cut into the shank of the ring,
thus preserving the images of the deer over time.
The heavy banding of gold raised over the deer and stone setting
to protect the surface and stetting damage of direct blows to the ring.
The over all feel was to be medieval, strong and enduring.
The shanks were to be heavy and in sterling silver with a touch of gold.
Being as they were to be on the finger of someone who is allergic to gold
yet have the gold incorporated in the design,
the gold banding is raised off the finger.
The sketches were to be “as close to the sketches as possible” and still look recognizable as deer.

Stag and Doe rings In Progress

In Progress

After the design was approved,
I carved the rings by hand and cast the main shanks in sterling.
Gold banding was cast separately for the man’s ring while the woman’s ring was adorned with gold wire.
The settings are of white gold.
All assembled with diamonds and blue zircons.
They are now happily married with their new rings they designed themselves,
created by hand from start to finish.

The progress of the ring’s creation is illustrated in my Gallery Page for the rings and may be found here.

The Rough Star Amulet

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on June 4, 2010
Posted in: Amulets, Druid Jewelry, nature Jewelry, Pagan Jewelry, Pentacles, Wiccan Jewelry. Tagged: Druid Jewelry, Magic Jewelry, Pagan Jewelry, Pentacle, Wiccan Jewelry. 1 Comment

I began to create my jewelry line in the early eighties.

After looking at a number of other pentacles available in shops, I decided to make my own version of the pentacle  the

The Rough Star

Rough Star

My intent was to create something that looked natural, yet not of any specific material. The texture is somewhat random, rough spots like bark but in no particular pattern. The Pentacle itself is “two sided” showing the weave of the star on both sides, a three dimensional piece and hung on a top bail with a jump ring.

When I started going to “shows” in California, the only real choices of festival was the craft fairs, Renaissance fairs and new age exhibits. As of yet, the West Coast was somewhat sparse in the Pagan and Wicca Movement, being as most of the folks there were interested in the blending of cultures between the East and West, rather than a “grass roots” movement of Earth religions.

When I exhibited my work at these events, the pagans came out of the wood work and told me under hushed whispers that they were of the old religion, but even then only spoke in a round about way. Rarely did I sell Pentacles, but when I did, this rough star was very popular and worn under the clothing of various folk who felt drawn to the piece, but uncomfortable in wearing outside of their shirts.

The closest I was able to approach a true Pagan Festival was when I was invited to a “Goddess Festival” but told it was a “Woman’s only” event and that my jewelry was welcome, but I was not.

In the Early Nineties, when the Pagans were “coming out of the broom closet” in LA, I moved to Virginia and it was as if I started all over again: hushed whispers and covert pentacles; but this time I met a number of practicing Pagans and was invited to many events, festivals and gatherings from Florida to Boston.. At one point I attended six Beltanes in a row, each with a new group in a different location on the Atlantic Coast.

Naturally I was confused, thinking that because of the open mindedness of the intellectual population of the Pacific, the folk would welcome the Pagan Movement, but alas; in my experience it was not the case. The East seemed to be more open to unusual ideas so long as you were right minded, well intended and your efforts speak for themselves.  With the influence the community I developed a wide selection of Pentacles featuring brooms, blossoms, grapes and shapes of many kinds.

It has been a while since I have been on the circuit, but I remember those days with great fondness, the traveling, the beautiful country side, the beautiful people, the mud, rain, wet clothes and flooded tents and time spent at laundry mats drying everything I own, but I still miss it. Each time I make one of the Rough Stars I remember the road, the people and stories with fond memories and grateful that I don’t have to steak my tent down for the coming rain.

The Star Drop Amulet

The shape of the eight point star is used as an artistic expression of the celestial points of light in classical and modern art though out the world. In paintings of the heavens, this shape was used to denote the North Star, the star of the Blue Fairy in Pinocchio, in child’s finger painting and in the most detailed maps of the constellations.

Star Drop Amulet
The Star Drop Amulet

As an artist, I was fascinated by it’s universal appeal and adopted it in my own paintings, sketches and illustrations. After experimenting with the design I discovered and inverted view including the descending ray expanded it’s meaning. No longer fixed in the sky the star isn’t fixed in the sky, the descending ray reaches towards the earth; a metaphor of bringing the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth. The Masons use the metaphor illustrated in their ancient building of temples; as noted by James Joyce in Finnegan’s Wake in the building of the Cathedral the bricks go up (raising the earth to heaven) and the hod returns “empty” or “filled with air” (spirit) bringing the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth. Although an often used quote used by Christians and Jews, the concept of Heaven on Earth actually predated the Monotheistic paths by centuries. The idea “If you live a good life you get to go to heaven” was not readily accepted by the Scots. Rather the idea “One makes their heaven or hell while still breathing” was more akin to the Old Religion, denoting responsibility of how one leads one’s life and bring the Ideal into the Real.

In some versions of the Star Card in the Tarot, we see the eight point star prominent in the sky above the Sky clad figure of Isis pouring “water” into a pool denoting the contribution of one’s consciousness to the Akashic Waters. More about this imagery and interpretation of the Star may be found here.

When wearing the Star Drop Amulet one is reminded of the power of virtue, of positive thinking, action, and conscious living. It is also a subliminal statement to those that see the bearer of the amulet, perhaps a reminder: life can be and will be better should we choose it: discarding grudges and moving forward in our lives.

The Dragon Ankh Earrings

You may remember the Dragon Ankh Amulet:
a combination of Serpent Power and the Egyptian sign of Life.
The Ankh focuses on the tenacity of life,
the spark where in union something new is created;
and the Dragon of Kundalini.
Positioning the Dragon’s neck so it curves around to create the Yoni,
the Dragon’s head rests at the point where all things intersect suggesting a conscious decision in transformation.
The tail drops below completing the design.

Because it is only ¾” I decided to offer The Dragon Ankh Earrings.
This would be a good amulet for those that are studying Yoga, Kundalini,
martial arts or an Egyptian enthusiast.
These earrings are to help focus and balance body, mind and spirit.

Designer Dragon Money Clips

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on May 23, 2010

Some years ago I was commissioned to create a version of the Dragon Money Clip
seen in the Travolta and Cage movie: “Face Off”.
After some discussion concerning design I developed my own version of the dragon
and produced the Dragon Money Clip.
It is not quite a serpentine Eastern Dragon,
nor the more “boxy” Western version but indeed my own kind of dragon
complete with eyes of jewels and a working jaw to clutch (perhaps “bite”) the bills.

Flame the Dragon Money Clip

Flame the Dragon Money Clip

After some time had passed I developed a second,
larger version of the Dragon Money Clip: Flame the Dragon Money Clip.
Again, not a style one could call East nor Western,
but an original face of a dragon.
I added a touch of the Eastern Look by including tendrils of flame along the face
but it has the stylized scales for of cranium containing the spring that works the jaw.
The Ocular cavities where the stones are set are a part of the design itself,
meaning two things: the design is not detracted by an obvious setting,
and second: the setting of the stones develop different expressions in each clip:
all with the intensity of a dragon gaze.

Like the First Dragon Money Clip,
the jaws are made to “bite” the bills instead of a simple spring bar
with a dragon image stamped across it.
The detail of scales,
flames and teeth and eyes are all there.
An actual sculpture of a dragon’s head;
sleek, durable and compact with your wad of bills folded neatly to slip into your pocket.

You have your choice of red,
blue, green and black stones for the eyes,
each specially made for the person who orders it.
I do not mass produce these clips,
so you will not find them anywhere else.
If you like the idea of a dragon money clip but want a different style,
no problem.
You may commission your own version based on your description
or sketches you make yourself.
Designing your own money clip is but one of the services I provide.
