The Boo Hoo Amulet of Amulets by Merlin

In my youth I was surrounded by Educators: both of my parents were teaching in Collages and Universities. Because of this I grew to know a number of professors who acted as if they knew everything, and to a youngster it seemed true. There were a number of occasions when at a social gathering of one sort of another I would overhear conversations between these giants of knowledge only to learn there were conflicts between their opinions as to what was “true”. After over hearing many of these over the years I became suspicious as to whether these human embodiments of Wisdom were actually fallible or not. Eventually I pulled my Father aside as asked him about it.

“Well, Son (My Father considered me so bright, he called me “Son”) there are some who know and some who think they know and raise their voices to shout down their inner voices telling themselves they aren’t sure.” Hence forth, I usually took those who raise their voices in debate as folks who are busily trying to convince themselves they are right.

In my adulthood I found a great number of “experts” who tend to voice a topic they either invented or hijacked and became authorities on the subject. I recall a friend of mine referring to these noble birds as “Boo Hoos” and thus the name stuck with me, it tended to become a reference to those who tend to make up stuff as they went along, rather than gleaning wisdom from a reliable source.

When I was on the circuit (attending festivals, events and gatherings of all kinds) I came across a great number of folks who anointed themselves as “experts” on a variety of subjects, mostly Metaphysical and Spiritual, thus the term “Boo Hoo” wound up dressed in Robes and carrying various accoutrements of a noble station. Personally I was concerned because not only they, but a host of other people took them seriously. Much like the self made gurus of the ’60s and ’70s, these “Boo Hoos” became prevalent and nearly worshiped by the uninitiated and inexperienced.

The Boo Hoo Amulet

The Boo Hoo Amulet

One night at a science fiction convention called “SheVaCon” (located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia) I found myself keeping company with my good friend Troy and a bottle of Scotch. We were well into our cups by that time and the subject of the Boo Hoo came up. I attempted to explain the idea to him and low and behold he understood the concept and became a Boo Hoo himself. Like Magic he looked at me with eyes of wisdom and understanding, opened his mouth and sang:

“I am Boo Hoo
I’m all Knowing
I am Speaking
Hot air Blowing
You are Listening
My head Growing
I am Boo Hoo
I am Teaching
Explaining all things
I am Reaching
Inventing new facts
Truth is screeching
I am Boo Hoo
I am Learning
Hearing my errors
My face burning
Students Returning
Stomach churning.

I was speechless. The melody was of a chant I was well familiar with, the words flowed out of him as if it was a well memorized incantation of Wisdom. I had no choice but to ask him his magical name (most Boo Hoos have magical names of one sort or another); and thus he spake unto me his sacred name The Great Sakima.

I was floored, the song ringing in my ears ever since.

Upon returning to my home (and sobriety) I was lost in though and imagined there was a need of greater understanding. I then began the commentary on this most sacred song (most sacred text and songs need a commentary: it is how one person highjacks another’s holy words and adopts them for their agendas). Deep into the night I wrote the translations of these phrases and came up with this:

A Commentary on the Chant of the Boo Hoo

I am Boo Hoo
This is a conformation of one’s Status. Obviously to truly know one’s self, one must face the inevitable. Alas for the Boo Hoo for the office of this sort is a troubled one. Let us examine the Holy Name: Boo Hoo.

Boo:
aside from the most obvious concept that to shout “BOO” to an unsuspecting chap may move one to a state of startled bewilderment; in Chinese the word “boo” translates “no”. In English, this rhymes with “Know” and as we may all agree that the synchronized connection is far too obvious to disclaim. However, if you truly wish to argue the point you are more that welcome to write your own chant.

Hoo:
This is also a revelation that is connected through the language’s mysterious process of rhyming, a manifestation that may be observed through the holy ritual of the Sick Puppy. Hoo is then reviled to be “Who”. So then to place the concepts together then one may discover that a Boo Hoo is indeed an individual that Knows All, although the answer may not be available at the time.

I’m all Knowing:
This point has been examined in the description above. I wish to note here that being all knowing doesn’t mean to know all and doesn’t mean that the Boo Hoo understands anything, hence the difference between knowledge and wisdom.

I am Speaking:
This is the most frequent pass time of the Boo Hoo. It has been said often that if a Boo Hoo isn’t talking, chances are that the Boo Hoo isn’t breathing. This tends to make those that live in the holy presence to develop selected hearing loss.

Hot air Blowing
This is a Mystery of the Boo Hoo. In winter a Boo Hoo in good form has been known to warm entire buildings. Thus: the popularity of attending classes at universities and the full congregation in churches across the world in the colder seasons. Also, transversely many schools tend to close in the summer months due to the excessive heat.

You are Listening:
A rare occasion for the intelligent. Indeed, the process of tagging each and every Boo Hoo is a must to prevent the unsuspecting individual from placing too much weight of one’s world view with out thinking for one’s self.

My head Growing:
Sometimes referred to the Rush of the Boo Hoo. This is highly addictive and stimulating in large quantities. Highly recommended for all to experience as much as possible.

I am Boo Hoo:
This is the reaffirmation again. It is the true mark of a Boo Hoo to drive home a point by repeating one’s self, some times to the point of a drone.

I am Teaching:
It has been often said that those who can’t do: teach (or become critics). Complaining is always a Boo Hoo’s first choice, but at times it is hard to tell the difference between the act of Teaching and the act of Complaining.

Explaining all things:
Again, another mystery of the Boo Hoo. It is not necessary for a Boo Hoo to understand that which he/she is explaining.

I am Reaching:
In order to be able to explain anything a Boo Hoo does not understand takes a bit of far fetched logic.

Inventing new facts:
One of the basic techniques of the Boo Hoo is if one can not quote a reliable source, make one up.

Truth is screeching:
This is an unfortunate by product of the Holy Babble.

I am Boo Hoo:
Although this is some-what monotonous, here we may observe the three stages of Boo Hoo manifestation:
1. The Rush
2. The Flush
3. The Crush

I am Learning:
A most devastating experience for a Boo Hoo. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, this can make a person such as a Boo Hoo a vary perilous individual.

Hearing my errors:
Many a Boo Hoo have self destruct with such an experience as this. Generally, a Boo Hoo must argue all points when faced with Truth. See: Inventing new Facts.

My face burning:
A common manifestation of the Boo Hoo. There are some Boo Hoos that can read by their own countenance, a concept that can not be taken Lightly.

Students Returning:
Usually carrying weapons and instruments of torture. There are some Boo Hoos who have taken to making tours around the country to avoid these incidents. It takes a while for students to figure out that they have been bedazzled only to find the Boo Hoo gone to the next county. Long Tours and Short term Memories are the best combination.

Stomach churning:
It has been said that a powerful Boo Hoo can make butter with the aide of such experiences.
Remember, if you find yourself confronted with a suspected Boo Hoo, check for the caution sign. If you find one, they are probably harmless. It is the un-tagged ones that are the most dangerous!

– The Grand Wazoo

Thus adopting a name from a Frank Zappa Album, I took on a new Boo Hoo name. As my head cleared from all of this hyperberlly, I then decided to create pamphlets of the Chant and commentary, however to see what the actual power of the Boo Hoo really is, I then attended an event called “Craftwise” in Connecticut. There, I distributed and posted the chant and commentary widely around the event to see the reaction. Because the actual source of these pamphlets were hidden, there was no coloring of the source to damage the message. Later I found myself in an elevator hearing two women discussing a workshop they were attending. On was saying to the other “At first I though he actually had something to say, then as time rolled by I figured out he was little more than a Boo Hoo”

Both pleased and alarmed, I began to think about a counter measure against such silliness and decided to create special tags for Boo Hoos (see inspiration from the chant). The design was a simple one, the shape of a caution sign with the words “Boo Hoo” in the center. At first I thought it best to offer these to people who were self proclaimed Boo Hoos. I would hand them a flier and if they laughed, I suggested they “submit” (a term that often got somewhat of a shock, only to find I was asking them to write a special document that they made up about the Boo Hoos and become experts on the subject) but in fact I found this was asking too much and I placed the project on ice.

As of late, I decide to re-ignite the Boo Hoo Amulet with a call to all who find themselves self made experts and wish to shout from the roof tops their wisdom and knowledge of (insert what ever here). And so, for your pleasure and gratification, I am not re-releasing the Boo Hoo Amulet. Wear with pride and honor, knowing your are what you make yourself to be and what you can convince others to believe. For Boo Hoos Everywhere.

Moon Flame Amulet from Amulets by Merlin

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on December 19, 2015

Fire and water have a tendency to cancel each other out,
yet we see this surprising combination in a multitude of forms.
The balance of a caldron over a fire is a great example:
the element of fire is beneath a body of water,
an elemental balance between forces:
the fire too low and the caldron will remain cold;
the fire too high and the water will boil over and extinguish the flame.
When working with opposites,
it is a question of balance:
heating the water until it goes from liquid to a gas:
transforming it as Elemental fire often does.

In a grand scale: stars
are a liquid-fire (plasma) form of Hydrogen
(the most plentiful substance in the known Universe).
Through heat and pressure the “gas” becomes liquid flame
and crushes the molecules into new forms of matter
only to explode out into surrounding space as a Nova.
Cascading into the surrounding space as iron,
gold and many other forms of mater.

We see this time and again:
leaves immersed in the medium of water
with the aide of fire’s trans-formative qualities to make a simple cup of tea.

Moon Flame Amulet
The Moon Flame Amulet

On a cold winter evening,
I found myself musing over the mixture of images:
the flame of transformation
and the Moon representing the tides of our watery oceans
sculpted a tiny piece:
a crescent moon gilded by flame
solidified in sterling silver:
the Moon Flame Amulet.
The flame is “almost” many things..
do you see a face?
a figure dancing in the light?
The Moon Flame is ever-changing…

Fox Amulet from Amulets by Merlin

Throughout the World, the Fox has gained a reputation in song and story. Many cultures have attributed qualities to the Fox which are quite similar.

The Fox as a totem suggests Magic, Shape-shifting and Invisibility. In China they are thought to take human form, Egyptian lore suggests the Fox brought favor from the Gods. In Persia the Fox assists the dead to the next life. In North America both the Hopi and Cherokee attribute great healing powers to the Fox. In the lore of the Apache it was the Fox who brought Fire to Humans.

The Fox is revered because of his/her ability to hide in plain sight: in the shadows of perception, thus the Fox lives on the edge of Faerie “between time and space”. The Fox may assist one to the realms beyond normal experience, thus it is the Fox who may guide you in places unknown and little understood.

The Fox Amulet, quietly sitting, patiently waiting for you to notice, giving you a wink when you do. The Fox Amulet is a smaller piece, only 3/4” tall, yet it is heavier than it appears. A small back bail for a light chain or cord is behind his head.

Sunflower Amulet from Amulets by Merlin

Shortly after I founded Amulets by Merlin in the 1980s, I was commissioned with a project: to develop a piece combining the two basic images used in the Sun and Star cards of Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot Deck. In the Sun card the main focus is the Sunflower: a common symbol harnessed in many other Tarot Decks, but this one was special: twelve segments, each divided into two aspects. This represents the houses of the Zodiac divided into their active and passive principals. In Crowley’s deck he also used the seven pointed star to symbolize the the Star Card: associated with Tazaddi (a Hebrew letter) often considered in Qabalah as “the fish Hook”, meaning the process of meditation is akin to lowering a “mental fish hook” plunged into the depths of the Great Unconsciousness (Akesha).

The Sunflower Amulet
Sunflower Amulet

Combining the aspects of these two ideas produces the simultaneous process of seeing all of creation in all of it’s glory and yet being “passive” enough to understand it’s subtleties.

The dear Lady suggested I place this in my line of jewelry so the virtues of the piece may spread to others. This I have done and so I present to you one of my first commissions and amulets in my line:
The Sunflower Amulet

Moon Phase Chain from Amulets by Merlin

The moon has been a powerful influence physically and mythic for centuries. The Lore of humanity across many cultures have attributed the Moon to many things. Watching the moon in it’s phases is something we have been doing for a very long time.

Moon Phase Chain

In Astrology, those born under different Lunar phases (Lunation) are said to have specific qualities:

Within the first quarter: (similar to Aries) they will probably prefer to take the initiative and will be ready to look for new interests in life, new people and new ideas.

In the second quarter: (similar to Leo) The person will be locked into their goals and have a strong need to create a legacy. They have a charisma drawing others to them, but instinctively use others rather than help them.

In the Third quarter or Full Moon: (like Libra) The person will need friendships, colleagues and relationships, and will relate well to others; easily able to achieve a balance between want and need. They will either be drawn to highly successful people or achieve success; both with the help of others.

In the third quarter (like Capricorn) they will often have clairvoyant insight and follow hunches rather than be logical; and will finish projects others start; reorganizing and sorting out problems left by others.

Many civilizations have relied on a lunar calendar. In China, the ideas are broken down to seven and a half day patterns

First quarter (new): The first quarter symbolizes birth, renewal, sowing and awakening, and is associated with spring.

Second quarter (waxing): The second quarter symbolizes potency, maturity, full growth and development, and is associated with summer.

Third quarter (full): The third quarter symbolizes organization, harvest, collection and storage, and is associated with autumn.

Fourth quarter (waning): The fourth quarter symbolizes completion, conclusion, hibernation and rest, and is associated with winter.

Much is written on the subject and include nodes, mansions or nakshatras, lunation and so on. For those who love Luna in her many aspects, I have created the Moon Phase Chain. Each link is carved front and back with craters representing the lunar surface, each in a phase: full, waxing and waning, gibbous and crescent. I make a variety of sizes from earrings and bracelets to full necklaces and belly chains.

If you would like a Moon Phase chain made for you, please visit my website featuring the Moon Phase Chain as a bracelet or longer as necklaces.

Celtic Lovers Knot Ring from Amulets by Merlin

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on November 30, 2015
Posted in: Celtic Jewelry, Celtic Knot Jewelry, Celtic Lore, Rings, Wedding Rings. Tagged: Celtic knot ring, Hand Fasting Jewelry, hand fasting ring, Handfasting ring, triditional lovers knot ring, wedding celtic knot, Wedding knot ring. Leave a comment

A variation on a theme: the Lover’s Knot. For centuries, this has been used in rigging by sailors, the merging of two ropes extending the use of one by merging it with the other: a knot that makes the bond stronger. In the Traditional Lover’s Knot Ring, I developed the design as a promise ring, hand fasting or wedding ring. I have used the same knotwork pattern in the creation of the Handfasting Bracelet.

Some have decided they like the idea yet wanted something a little different, so I designed the knot to be more “Celtic”, using the traditional knot work approach illustrated in the book of Kells. The weaving “in and out” says the same thing: two become one, their strength is greater than the sum of it’s parts; a metaphor describing how a couple’s commitment may strengthen each others’ lives. This Celtic version of the Lover’s Knot is woven “in and out” providing a more dense look to the design. By following the strands that wrap around the band you can see that the “two (chords) are one”. This design has been used to symbolize the “wedding knot” for centuries and used in “handfasting”: a promise to be true “for a year and a day”.

Celtic Lover's Knot Ring

If you would like to have this ring made for you, don’t worry about sizes, each is made as they are ordered to allow for the right size and the possibility of inscriptions to be made on the inside of the band. Simply go to my web page featuring the Celtic Lover’s Knot Ring.

Large Awen Amulet from Amulets by Merlin

Posted in: Amulets, Celtic Jewelry, Celtic Lore, Druid Jewelry, Pagan Jewelry. Tagged: Awen Jewelry, druid amulet, Druid Jewelry, Isaac Bonewits Amulet, Isaac Bonewits Awen, Isaac bonewits jewelry. Leave a comment

A few years ago I created Jewelry for Isaac Bonewits. He created renderings of several designs and sent them to me to create for his special line of Jewelry. One of them is the Awen.

The Large Awen
Large Awen Amulet

In his words:
“The sign of “the Three Rays” is used by members of the United Ancient Order of Druids, the Ancient Order of Druids, the Order of Bards Ovates; Druids, and many other followers of Druidry. It can be seen as symbolizing Sky Father Energy in balance with the Earth Mother energy of the Druid Sigil, as well as any of a thousand other sets of three ideas.”

The design itself is a wreath of oak leaves, three staves emanating from three Acorns. The bail from which to hang the amulet is also an oak leaf curled to hold the chain or cord. On the reverse side of the “signature” of the artist: “Merlin” or Kirk McLaren of Amulets by Merlin.

After creating the original Awen I have received several requests for a larger version of the piece: same wreath of leaves, acorns and staves: but larger. I now present to you: the Large Awen.

Two Awens

When Isaac was still with us he traveled with the amulets and his books and other items; he even created a special portion of his website to feature the work. Since his passing into the Summerland I have continued to produce his line for him. For each piece purchased Isaac’s Widow receives a royalty to help through difficult times and encourage in efforts to promote good will and clarity to the world. To learn more about Isaac Bonewits, his writings and more, you may visit his website.

Gryphon Amulet from Amulets by Merlin

Combining the two “Royal Beasts” of the animal Kingdom,
the Lion and the Eagle are merged into a fearsome creature: the Gryphon (griffon or griffin) .

Gryphon Amulet

Gryphon Amulet

The earliest images of griffins are the thirty five hundred year old frescoes
in the Throne Room of the Palace of Knossos.
It continued being a favored beast in Archaic and Classical Greek art.
The Gryphon appears about a thousand years after Bronze Age in Crete
around the fifth to fourth century BCE originating from the Persian Empire.
The Greeks adopted the Gryphon as sacred animals loyal to Apollo.
Some have suggested that the word “Gryphon” is cognate with Cherub.

As a creature identified in so many cultures,
Adrienne Mayor proposed the Gryphon was an ancient misconception
derived from the fossilized remains of the Protoceratops
found in gold mines in southeastern Kazakhstan.

With centuries of lore surrounding the Gryphon,
many attributes have been associated with the Mythic Beast.
A symbol of divine power and a guardian of the all things sacred,
they guard treasure and priceless possessions;
a protector from evil, secret slander and “witchcraft”
(a term used by many cultures referring to the kind of person who is able to “powerfully influence another’s will”;
a charismatic for example – not the modern day usage of Wicca nor the craft they harness).
A Gryphon’s claw was believed to have medicinal properties
and a feather could restore sight to the blind.
Goblets fashioned from Gryphon claws
(actually antelope horns)
and griffin eggs (usually ostrich eggs)
were highly prized in medieval European courts and possessed the qualities of the noble beast.
Many artisans are still replicating the look and feel of these Goblets to this day.

The Gryphon’s amalgamation of lion and eagle gains in courage and boldness.
In Heraldry it denotes strength,
military courage and leadership
and suggests one must combine intelligence and strength
– always a good decision.

In the creation of the Gryphon Amulet
I have softened the over all feel of the piece
to indicate it’s position between the “real world” and “that which is beyond the veil”.
The over all shape is bold,
yet the texture is softened,
nearly “out-of-focus” yet retaining the beak
(with a slight snarl) and wings of the eagle.
The claws are undistinguished between the talons of the bird and the paws of the lion,
thus illustrating the potential of both.
I have also included a portion of a Halo to represent it’s sacred position
of protector and defender of for whom is to wear it.
This is an Amulet of Protection,
Enhancement of Strength and Clarity.
This is for those who are in the field of battle whether the front line,
the front office or the fast lane.
It is to enhance nobility, perseverance and courage.
If you would like a Gryphon Amulet,

Custom Seals of Solomon Bracelet from Amulets by Merlin

The Seals of Solomon are both famous in legend and myth,
yet extremely obscured concerning their meaning.
Typically we hear about them in the Arabian nights legend:
a seal of Solomon kept the Jinn inside.

The Seals of Solomon Bracelet

The Seals of Solomon Bracelet

Historically we discover the source of the Seals:
Solomon, the son of King David who established the city of Jerusalem
and Father of a great deal of esoteric writings and traditions.
Solomon is said to have been given both wisdom and knowledge
and ability to distinguish morally
between good and evil thorough a deeper understanding of the universe.
One of his legacies is what is known as The Greater Key of Solomon:
a series of images containing geometric patters
combined with Hebrew and other images.
Each seal is dedicated to a specific quality and described by the Planets
(Mars, Venus and so on) focusing those virtues.

Classically
each seal is to be made at a specific day and time through out the week
and made to enhance or “seed” those qualities desired.
Virtue, Honor protection, Seeking Hidden Talent and other qualities
are imbued by the various seals.
Every planet holds various qualities
and several seals are attributed to each planet.
The person who works with a seal has the opportunity
to focus the virtue they are concerned with by creating
(or commissioning) the seal they are interested in.

A bracelet of the Seven of the Solomon Seals
mounted on leather
.
Each seal was made separately with a concho screw in the back.
The leather bracelet was punched to allow each seal to be mounted.
Because of the need to have the bracelet to “lay flat” against the wrist,
I carved the seals (in order) to curved and fit snugly around the wrist.

This was created to the specific qualifications of the person who ordered it,
all one of a kind work with no mold taken.
It currently is being worn by the Gentleman who commissioned it.

Custom Awen Necklace from Amulets by Merlin

A fellow who loved the Awens I developed for Isaac Bonewits
wanted a special piece made for him.
The Awen is an ancient symbol attributed the the Druids of old.
As Isaac Bonewits put it in his website:

“The sign of “the Three Rays” is used by members of the United Ancient Order of Druids, the Ancient Order of Druids, the Order of Bards Ovates & Druids, and many other followers of Druidry. It can be seen as symbolizing Sky Father Energy in balance with the Earth Mother energy of the Druid Sigil, as well as any of a thousand other sets of three ideas.”

Custom Awen Necklace

Custom Awen Necklace

This one of a kind piece is larger,
solid and inlaid with amber.
It was designed to allow the hand carved amber
to be set with open backs providing light to shine through and bounce about,
giving the impression of emanation from the dots and rays in the center.
Three circles surround the amber,
each grooved and filled with translucent enamel
specially mixed to replicate amber.
A wreath of Oak leaves frame the amulet,
hung by sterling chain and wooden beads to accent the piece.

This is a one of a kind Custom Awen Necklace,
specially designed.
Should you wish to have your design made for you,
