The Chaos Amulet

Chaos theory is a field of study in physics, mathematics, and philosophy examining the behavior of dynamic systems sensitive to preliminary conditions. Differences in initial conditions yield widely diverging outcomes: chaotic systems; rendering long-term prediction impossible. An easy way to think of it is the Butterfly Effect (exemplified in science fiction, predominately time travel scenarios): a single action in one area has a potential effect in unpredictable ways anywhere (and any-when).

The Chaos Amulet
The Chaos Amulet

Chaos was the first of the Greek Gods to materialize during the creation of the universe.

Like an envelope of brooding mist, She surrounded the earth with potential. Chaos was the Mother of the manifestations: Nyx (Night), Erebos (Darkness), Aither (Light) and Hemera (Day), and the spirits of Elemental Air. She was also a Goddess of Fate who bore a daughter Nyx and in turn produced Her grand-daughters of the Moirai who assigned the inescapable destiny of man.

In both the linguistic and the mythic sense, Chaos is a state where there are so many random events, there form new and sometime innovative substances, methods and ideas. As exemplified in the decent from the Goddess Chaos, the result is the opposite: In the beginning there was Chaos (general havoc and unpredictability) who gave birth to fate (general order) who then gave birth to Destiny (specific order): Order in the most rigid sense. To break out of this cocoon of stagnation (assigned destiny), one turns to chaos to break free the pattern.

For those interested in the edge of manifestation, I have created The Chaos Amulet. Signified by the classic lighting bolts expanding from the center, the symbol is stretched over a near hemisphere shaped amulet. If you are interested in Hundun or Eris; if you are Gnostic or simply pragmatic, this amulet is for you.

The Bubo Amulet

“All night long,
The Midnight Owl,
Hunts the woodlands
on the prowl.

“Daylight finds him
Still and blinking,
Almost as if
he is thinking.

“Many say
he’s wise and deep;
Really
it’s just lack of Sleep”

-A poem my grandfather often quoted,
source unknown

The Bubo Amulet
Bubo Amulet

Bubo was Athena’s beloved magical owl and often accompanied her perched on her shoulder. Bubo had the ability to reveal untruths and expand Athena’s wisdom. Athena often hunted with her solitary companion. She also sent him abroad to learn of what was going on both of her pray and to learn truths of what was happening in the land.

After Perseus’ first encounter with Calibos, he loses his magical helmet. Zeus decides to provide him with a Magical creature to aid him in his quest. Zeus commands Athena to hand over her beloved magical owl to Perseus, but she “will never part” with Bubo.

In the film The Clash of the Titans a copy of Bubo is created and sent to Perseus to assist him in his quest, but what is not reveled is that this mechanical Owl is only a copy, although loyal and courageous. Athena and Bubo are never separated and to this day should something happen, Athena knows of it because of Bubo’s loyalty to his Goddess.

In tribute to Bubo and his ability to collect knowledge and give it to the goddess, I have created the Bubo Amulet. This talisman is for those that are seekers of knowledge, hunters of the legitimacy, unafraid of what they might get into to learn the truth.

Goddess of Attitude Amulet

There has to be one.
I see her manifest everywhere:
hands on hips, looking at me as if I had three heads.

Goddess of Attitude Amulet
Goddess of Attitude Amulet

I believe in the Goddess of attitude,
a kind of archetype that says
“Ya… Right!”

A Goddess that already knows what I am about to say,
simply tolerates me long enough
to get my ideas out long enough
for them to be shot down.

Attitude on a god-like scale.

To pay tribute to this ever present power of our lives,
may I present to you:

the Goddess of Attitude Amulet.

By wearing this Amulet
you may show your position without voicing it,
you can say much with just a look.
By wearing this amulet,
you may ward yourself by meeting
attitude with attitude!
Fire with fire!
A Haughty Look with an intense stare!
Even when you are not looking at your opponent,
The glare of the amulet repels the self important,
The Self Righteous,
The Self Inflicted!

Goddess knows we need all the help we can get.

Shiva

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on February 23, 2010
Posted in: Multi Faith, Sculpture. Tagged: Althea B. McLaren, de Vinci, Hindu God, McLaren Studio Academy, Michael Angelo, Shiva Statue, Terra Cotta Statue. 2 Comments

Althea B. McLaren created the “McLaren Studio Academy” in the early Seventies. Her curriculum encompassed technique of painting and sculpture, teaching from her home studio in Fullerton, California. Lessons were both private and small classes; encouraging beginners and refining professionals alike. Her “heroes” were Michael Angelo and Leonardo de Vinci for both their technique and drive towards perfection in every thing they did.

Shiva Statue

I had the great honor to study with her over a couple decades: focusing on sculpture and harnessing Terra Cotta as my primary medium. Once she estimated my ability as sufficient, Althea suggested I make a “master piece”: a project that would demonstrate an understanding of the medium, how it dries at different speeds and how to prevent cracking; the sense of proportions of the human frame. She also encouraged me to illustrate my understanding of religious art: where one should reveal muscles and why in certain cases it is better to render shape in alternate ways.

I chose the classic statue of Shiva. In this terra cotta project, I translated the Hindu God into my own interpretation. The Face is classically human in a meditative state, the hands are very human. The arms in contrast have the shape of serpents: boneless (gods don’t have bones!) The Flames are staggered around developing the corona, the serpents manifest out of the head, all the while standing in a dance position on the back of a gnome of ignorance. One hand holing the flame of Transmutation, one holding a lotus of Enlightenment, one playing the drum of Time, one hand Bestowing Boons (pointing down) and the final hand held up in the sign of “Fear Not”. The configuration below is a lotus that is actually an incense burner, fully functional. When lit the smoke rises through out the statue it encircles the statue with the ever changing shape of serpents.

The terra cotta piece has a maze of thick and thin elements; each had to be wrapped and continually sprayed with water to prevent it from drying too quickly, a process that took weeks to set before a cone 5 firing. All of this was finally mounted on a teak.

With all of my work, the first thing I thought of after completion was “What next?”

The very next step was founding “Amulets by Merlin”, scaling my sculpture from “gallery size” pieces in clay to smaller pieces in silver, bronze and gold. I still work on larger pieces from time to time, but I will always rely on the foundation of work I gleaned from one of the great masters of the 20th century.

Talking Skull Charm

Although hair beads have been around for centuries, noted use may be observed from Africa to the Indies, from Scotland to Tibet; the style of placing beads in one’s hair hasn’t been in vogue for more than a few decades. If you have seen the Movie “10” starring Bo Derrick and Dudley Moore, you may remember the slow motion scene of Bo splashing through the waves with her hair loaded down with multi colored beads. Since then we have seen the popularity rise among the main stream, used by men and women of all nationalities. From the over loaded quaffs to a single bead to accent the tip of a braid, hair beads keep the strands weighted, refined and beautiful.

Talking Skull Hair Bead

As we grow older, our attention to the ancestors becomes more significant; many of our friends and family have passed away yet we do not find the sensation of their passing as a final state of being. For centuries there are accounts of folk that have spoken with loved ones, friends and relatives beyond the veil. Words of wisdom, compassion, concern or simply the sensation that they are present have comforted, enlightened or alarmed us as our awareness broadens, our concern deepens and our need of understanding surmounts.

In answer to the desires for those of us who are concerned with such matters, I have created a series of tiny amulets signifying our connection with the ancestors. By using them as charms and hair beads, we may utilize these significant and iconic amulets to keep our attention fresh and our focus on greater matters than our own needs wants and desires. One of them is the Talking Skull Charm. By adding this piece to your charm bracelet or necklace, adding them into the mix of talismans and amulets that you are currently working with. By adding the bead to your hair braid or dread, the weight is a constant reminder: Wisdom of the Dead and our ever lasting connection with the unfathomable line of ancestry of which we are all a part.

The Pan Penannular

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on February 18, 2010
Posted in: Celtic Jewelry, Celtic Lore, Pagan Jewelry, Wiccan Jewelry. Tagged: Brooch, Pan amulet, Pan jewelry, Pan Penannular, Pan Talisman, Penannular. Leave a comment

Penannulars are intended for the use of clasping capes, cloaks and scarves. The pins I place on them are stout and designed for the heavy and loose woven fabric like wool. (A short video is presented to illustrate how to use the Penannular in the website) You must have seen these huge brooches on the kilts and sashes in the Braveheart and Rob Roy movies. These Celtic cloaking devices are the precursor to the safety pin; quite ingenious technology for medieval period garb.

The Pan Penannular

In creating an Amulet of Pan, I chose his musical aspect: He plays his pipes with great concentration; wreathed in grape leaves with a grape cluster as a foundation.

The culmination of these two pieces is the Pan Penannular: the frame of the Brooch is made of a grape arbor heavily laden with leaves, vines and grapes thus carrying a theme of a Pan-orama, combining the feel of good music, good wine and a celebration of life itself. This hybrid of cultures: Celtic technology and Greek Myth is presented in a modern approach of the Brooch of two ancient cultures.

The Capricorn Amulet

Capricorn is
Cardinal (initiation, creativity and leadership)
Earth (socially acceptable, very polite, prudent, and aroused by sensory stimulation).
Capricorn’s house begins with the longest night of the year
and the promise of longer days, yet the winter deepens.
This conflict is reflected in Capricorn’s qualities.

The Capricorn Amulet

The Capricorn Amulet

Saturn’s limiting influence of Capricorn is dominate;
associated with the confines of Time itself,
Capricorn does best when limited to deadlines
and delineated spaces and shine under pressure.
Capricorns are extremely solid,
practical and determined.
Even as winter sets in,
Capricorn “sees the light at the end of the tunnel”
though they deem it nearly unreachable,
their determination cannot be thwarted
even when faced with insurmountable odds.
Thus they become extremely dependable both as workers and managers.
Because they perceive everything as “weaker” than themselves,
they trust little they themselves did not set in motion,
they test and question everything,
thus they can become tedious when faced with uncertainty.
Their powers of manipulation have given them the phrase
“I Use” for everything from objects,
people and situations.

The Capricorn Amulet
reflects the Capricorn’s essence
of fierce determination and drive to complete their goals;
solid Earth texture framed in a solid circle of delineation.

This amulet is for both the Capricorn sun and moon signs:
The Sun signs are those of the Zodiac houses under which you are born:
December 22 – January 19/20,
or if you are more concerned with your moon sign,
the house the moon occupied while you were born.
It may also be used as an amulet
should you wish to emphasize the qualities of Capricorn in your life,
actions, position in your community or home;
perfect for those who are analysts, quality control,
advisers, managers and workers of all kinds.

The Sagittarius Amulet

Sagittarius is
Mutable (flexibility, service-providing and expansion)
Fire (liveliness, energy, passion, enthusiasm, valor and action)
and is principally aware of and concerned with
humanitarian and existential concerns.
The House of Sagittarius is between the time when the veil is the thinnest
and moves toward the longest night of the year.

The Sagittarius Amulet

The Sagittarius Amulet

Ruled by the planet Jupiter
(Jove may be envisioned by a Sheriff with a tin star:
happily providing peace and stability with good humor,
yet ever vigilant to keep things in order with a serious threat of punishment
)
Sagittarians are optimistic and freedom-loving,
Jovial and good-humored, honest and straightforward,
intellectual and philosophical.
However if provoked can be blindly optimistic, hasty, superficial, tactless and agitated.
Their one tendency is brutal honesty
providing them with the tools of a good sounding board.
Their greatest dislike is falsehood and simply cannot tolerate deceit
or the people that use it as a weapon to get what they want.
Their first response is to destroy what they perceive as a danger to others
or mark it as “off limits” to the unwary.
They are honorable, honest,
trustworthy, truthful, generous and sincere.
They are usually on the side of the underdog in society
they will fight for a cause they believe to be just,
and are prepared to be rebellious.

The Sagittarius Amulet holds the classic symbol of the Drawn Arrow,
derived from the primal concept of the House:
“I Perceive”.
One of the most common phrases of a Sagittarius is:
“Get to the point!”
The amulet is framed in a deeply carved circle and textured with fire.

This amulet is for both the Sagittarius sun and moon signs:
The Sun signs are those of the Zodiac houses under which you are born:
November 22 – December 21,
or if you are more concerned with your moon sign,
the house the moon occupied while you were born.

It may also be used as an amulet
should you wish to emphasize the qualities of Sagittarius in your life,
actions, position in your community or home;
perfect for those who are in Law enforcement and the judiciary branch of society,
leaders of all kinds, trouble shooters, warriors and councilors.

The Scorpio Amulet

Scorpio is a
Fixed (stabilization, determination, depth and persistence)
Water (cooperative, companionable, hospitable and sociable)
and straddles Samhain,
the time of the year when the veil between worlds is the thinnest.

The Scorpio Amulet

The Scorpio Amulet

Scorpios are self-confident, intelligent,
and strong-willed offering their opinion whether you like it or not.
Ruled by Mars
they will resort to cutting verbal
and physical violence when angered;
and like Mars it’s symbol also uses the “Broken Cross”
(arrow at the end)
signifying a quick movement through matter.

Scorpio itself
is associated with Transmutation
beginning with the Scorpion:
reactionary and hard pressed to get more then a basic self-centered response.
Once they grow older,
Scorpio becomes the Eagle,
still set apart yet with a much better perspective;
allowing them to see beyond their own issues
and encompasses a broad view.
Finally they evolve into the Phoenix:
harnessing their experience of the Human Condition,
allowing their perspective to stretch beyond
even the whole of the Human Experience.
Thus the short phrase “I Create”
applies to both their inward progression
and the outward response to their drive of self Transmutation,
producing a fierce beauty in their wake.

The Scorpio Amulet holds the classic Glyph of Scorpio:
double crescents with the arrow
(cross of movement) at its tail;
the symbol is encircled by a deeply cut frame
and textured with turbulent water.

This amulet is for both the Scorpio sun and moon signs:
The Sun signs are those of the Zodiac houses
under which you are born:
October 23 – November 22,
or if you are more concerned with your moon sign,
the house the moon occupied while you were born.
It may also be used as an amulet
should you wish to emphasize the qualities of Scorpio in your life,
actions, position in your community or home;
perfect for those who are Artists or in professional careers
such as medicine chemistry and physics,
yet good in any task that requires sound judgment and creativity.

The Libra Amulet

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on February 11, 2010
Posted in: Zodiac Amulets. Tagged: Astrology Amulets, Astrology jewelry, Astrology Talismans, Libra Amulet, Libra jewelry, Libra pendant, Libra talisman, Zodiac Jewelry, Zodiac pendant, zodiac pendants, zodiac talisman. 3 Comments

Libra is
Mutable (adaptability, service-providing and expansion)
Air (curious, initiative, original, and well-disciplined, quick thinkers).
Libra tends to be associated
with Law and Justice because of
their ability to perceive a situation
and find its balance intuitively.
When associating themselves with others,
they tend to be extremely diplomatic
yet when faced with primal issues
of right and wrong,
become very hard lined and stubborn.
Hence they are at times referred to as
“The iron hand in the velvet glove”.

The Libra Amulet

The Libra Amulet

Libra’s phrase is
“We Balance”
because of their unconscious drive
to create order in their lives
whether it be with friends and family
(seeking a peaceful settlement)
their environment
(they love symmetry)
or themselves as they seek to keep healthy in mind body and spirit.
For all their efforts to keep things balanced,
they tend to get caught up in their own perceptions
and tend to over look new information as it arrives,
thus their tendency to miss ideas threatening their perspective,
and become upset
(more with themselves)
as their world view becomes distorted.

Libra is associated with Venus,
a planet usually associated with Love
because it is the balance between
the Spirit (the circle)
and Matter (the cross);
thus Libra tends to be concerned with emotional issues,
not taking kindly to insult
and tend to carry grudges,
yet reward their focus of affection
with the greatest kindness and compassion.

The Libra Amulet
holds the classic symbol of the scales
with a deep cut frame “brushed” with air
moving in a multitude of directions.
The Scales of its central focus
provide the balance between directions,
actions and intent.

This amulet is for both the Libra sun and moon signs:
The Sun signs are those of the Zodiac houses
under which you are born:
September 23 – October 23/24,
or if you are more concerned with your moon sign,
the house the moon occupied while you were born.
It may also be used as an amulet
should you wish to emphasize the qualities of Libra in your life,
actions, position in your community or home;
perfect for those who are practicing Law,
educators, councilors and arbitrators.
