The Custom Phoenix Amulet

A gentleman asked me to make an amulet for him.
In his youth he used to watch “the Phoenix”
and fell in love with the amulet worn by the star.
The Show itself was a “one hit wonder” beginning and ending on 1982.
The show followed the discovery and missions
of an ancient astronaut discovered within a sarcophagus,
unearthed from a Peruvian tomb.

Custom Phoenix Amulet

Custom Phoenix Amulet

After searching the web for someone who may provide a copy for him,
he discovered the original makers of the piece went out of business
and the piece is no longer available.
Then he found me.
I did the research and found very few images of the amulet,
every one of them blurry,
distorted,
low rez.
Not a lot to go on.

I am very sensitive to re-creating other people’s designs,
being as I create original and unique pieces myself.
After some long discussion with him concerning this point,
I decided to take on the task with the understanding
it will be my “interpretation” of the design,
rather than an exact copy of the piece.
Being as the images were blurry and distorted,
it wasn’t too difficult to add my own flair.

The theme is simple:
the circle with the triangle represents the element of fire
(a classic symbol widely used in artwork)
and a phoenix rises from the flames.
I sculpted and cast each separate carving:
the Geometrical shape is of bronze,
the actual phoenix is in Sterling Silver,
all mounted an a heavy rope chain.
The over all shape is similar,
but the phoenix is different from the original.

This was made as a one of a kind Phoenix Amulet,
no mold was take for reproduction
and now resides on the bearer of the noble bird.

The Wand – Cane

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on January 16, 2011
Posted in: Wands. Tagged: custom magic wand, custom magick wand, custom walking stick, Custom wand, hidden wand, magic wand, magick wand, wand and walking stick. 1 Comment

Some time ago Skyler contacted me about a special project.
He has made his circle’s emblem for him over the years,
however he wanted a special piece piece made for him: a Wand.
Over the years I have made several,
each a special commission designed for the person’s needs.

Skyler was no exception,
after multiple emails and phone conversations
he developed his ideas in several drawings:
Labradorite as a pummel, set into a cluster of his emblem,
the wands handle was to be composed of several bands.
The actual Heart of the wand was to be of a wood which pulls his local environment:
he decided on manzanita.
Being in the Las Vegas area,
one of the local woods which grows in his area is the very gnarly wood.
The business end is a stone he selected for his own purposes.

Wand

Wand

To protect the wand
he wanted a sheath it could slide into and carry with him
on the long trek into the wilderness.
So to accomplish this we decided on a copper tube
with a threaded top for the wand to screw into.
He then sent me sketches and the wood he selected
for the heart and give me instructions to augment the design as I saw fit.

To begin with the over all patterning of the heart was to be of a serpent:
to carry the theme throughout the design
I incorporated snakes binding the handle on each end:
pulling the personal symbols into the piece
and then extending into the coupling of the wand to the walking stick.

Pummel

Pummel

The handle itself is a series of snakes
wrapped around the rod in a clock wise fashion
(we are north of the equator.
In this hemisphere one uses the “local current” and go with the flow).
Instead of biting it’s tail,
the serpents are crossing their tails:
one way it draws,
the other way it pushes).
Each serpent holds a diamond in it’s head:
the third eye, providing in inference of Vision and clarity in one’s work.
Between Skyler’s emblems are two seven point stars,
one pointing up and one pointing down,
again allowing a push and draw.

In order to expand the design
I set the tails of four snakes into the collar
which then loop into each other.
Because I was dealing with a multilevel design,
parts of which are (shall we say)
inferred into the negative space of the center,
the flair out about the wand’s heart.
Each piece was sculpted in wax,
then cast into bronze,
mounted on brass tubing and sealed with sterling silver.
For the tube of copper,
I cast a footing in bronze which holds several serpent and personal symbols.
The shaft was the hand engraved
– diamond cut strokes for light to flash when seen in firelight.

The base of the Cane

The base of the Cane

The last revision to the design was to include his personal seal to the sheath;
hand engraving the monogram on the outside of the tube.

Once all the parts were calculated,
carved and cast;
the next step was to shape the heart of the wand.
I removed the layers of bark so characteristic of manzanita,
providing depth and focus for Skyler’s primary design.
Enhancing the drawing by allowing the natural color of the wood
to accent the flow of the wand.
At the tip of the wand I carved jaws in the wood,
hallowed out in the shape of the stone for setting:
the last step in activating the piece.

Skylers scroll was set into the handle’s tube
and the the emblems were used as prongs for setting the stone.
The inside of the wand’s collar it is threaded
for the wand to be placed securely into the sheath.

With all of my work, each piece is designed for potential,
not “pre-charged”.
Each amulet, talisman, seal, wand, atheme (etc)
holds the emblems and symbols of the people who commission the to charge themselves.
In this case toe process of placing the stone
in the tip was the moment of activation.
All of the serpents,
seals and symbols are there for him to bless,
enhance, and use.

I provide the conduit.

The Sunflower Amulet

Shortly after I founded Amulets by Merlin in the 1980s, I was commissioned with a project: to develop a piece combining the two basic images used in the Sun and Star cards of Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot Deck. In the Sun card the main focus is the Sunflower: a common symbol harnessed in many other Tarot Decks, but this one was special: twelve segments, each divided into two aspects. This represents the houses of the Zodiac divided into their active and passive principals. In Crowley’s deck he also used the seven pointed star to symbolize the the Star Card: associated with Tazaddi (a Hebrew letter) often considered in Qabalah as “the fish Hook”, meaning the process of meditation is akin to lowering a “mental fish hook” plunged into the depths of the Great Unconsciousness (Akesha).

The Sunflower Amulet
Sunflower Amulet

Combining the aspects of these two ideas produces the simultaneous process of seeing all of creation in all of it’s glory and yet being “passive” enough to understand it’s subtleties.

The dear Lady suggested I place this in my line of jewelry so the virtues of the piece may spread to others. This I have done and so I present to you one of my first commissions and amulets in my line:
The Sunflower Amulet

Merlin’s Om Collection

The Om is a combination
of the first and last letter
of the Sanskrit alphabet.
In “western terms”
it may be considered
the “Alpha and Omega”
with similar meanings:
it encompasses the first and last sounds,
ideas, manifestations of all things.
Unlike the Greek equivalent,
it dose not refer simply to the first and last,
it encompasses everything in between.

Merlin’s Om Collection

In previous blogs
I have gone into detail
with more about the Om (Aum):
featuring the pendant and earrings.

I am pleased to announce
Merlin’s Om Collection:
you may purchase the Amulet and earrings
as a set
with the option of chain in your choice of length.
The ancient Sanskrit glyph “Om” featured in this collection encompasses all things .
This set is for those who wish to be reminded
of and/or harness the depth of this “simple” symbol.

Om Earrings

In the Sixties “Om”
(or Aum”)
was placed in pop culture through out America and Europe.
Even the Moody Blues even wrote a song “Aum”
in the finale of
“In search of the Lost Chord”
of their Threshold series.
Even as our pop-culture moved on to other things,
Om continued to be what it is:
a very sacred and complex idea.
In an earlier blog
I wrote a bit about it’s use and history.
I created my own version of the Om Amulet
by encasing it within a circle.

Om Earrings

Om Earrings

To accompany the Om Amulet,
I have also developed the Om Earrings.
The symbol is made with a small bail within the top of the Sanskrit word,
then I added a jump ring to suspend it with a earring finding.
The added jump ring gives the glyph additional movement
as it adorns the ear.
Flanked on either side with an OM,
one is surrounded with eternity and peace.
These earrings are for those who wish to be reminded of
and/or wish to harness the depth of this “simple” symbol.

The Large Awen Amulet

A few years ago I created Jewelry for Isaac Bonewits. He created renderings of several designs and sent them to me to create for his special line of Jewelry. One of them is the Awen.

The Large Awen
Large Awen Amulet

In his words:
“The sign of “the Three Rays” is used by members of the United Ancient Order of Druids, the Ancient Order of Druids, the Order of Bards Ovates; Druids, and many other followers of Druidry. It can be seen as symbolizing Sky Father Energy in balance with the Earth Mother energy of the Druid Sigil, as well as any of a thousand other sets of three ideas.”

The design itself is a wreath of oak leaves, three staves emanating from three Acorns. The bail from which to hang the amulet is also an oak leaf curled to hold the chain or cord. On the reverse side of the “signature” of the artist: “Merlin” or Kirk McLaren of Amulets by Merlin.

After creating the original Awen I have received several requests for a larger version of the piece: same wreath of leaves, acorns and staves: but larger. I now present to you the newest of Isaac’s line: the Large Awen.

Two Awens

When Isaac was still with us he traveled with the amulets and his books and other items; he even created a special portion of his website to feature the work. Since his passing into the Summerland I have continued to produce his line for him. For each piece purchased Isaac’s Widow receives a royalty to help through difficult times and encourage in efforts to promote good will and clarity to the world. To learn more about Isaac Bonewits, his writings and more, you may visit his website.

In the mid Sixties, the word “Om” or Aum” written out in Sanskrit was placed in posters, album records, flags and scribbled in the corners of Yearbook albums across America and Europe. The influence of India and the far eastern portions of Asia spread throughout global pop culture. The Moody Blues even wrote a song “Aum” in the finale of “In search of the Lost Chord” of their Threshold series.

Om Amulet
The Om Amulet

Because the glyph seemed to be very simple, some tended to toss out the meaning as if it was candy. As our pop-culture moved on to other ideas and symbols, the Om stayed with many people, striking something very deep, and for good reason.

The Māndukya Upanishad is entirely devoted to the explanation of the syllable. The syllable contains three phonemes, a, u and m, symbolizing the Three Vedas or the Hindu Trimurti (sacred texts) or the three stages of life (birth, life and death).

The Sanskrit name for the syllable is praṇava, from a root nu “to shout, sound, praise”, or: pra-nu- “to make a humming or droning sound”. The syllable aum is first described as all-encompassing mystical entity. All over India and Nepal, ‘aum‘ can be seen virtually everywhere. Before creation began it was “Shunyākāsha”, the emptiness or the void; meaning “no sky”, is more than nothingness, because everything then existed in a state of potentiality. The vibration of “AUM” symbolizes the manifestation of God. The mantra “AUM” is the vibration of the Supreme. When taken letter by letter, A-U-M represents the divine energy (Shakti) united in its three elementary aspects: Bhrahma Shakti (creation), Vishnu Shakti (preservation) and Shiva Shakti (liberation, and/or destruction).

The Word “OM” has achieved many uses: from statues to manuscripts to Hexes (written designs focused to manifest intent) and amulets. I created my own version of the Om Amulet by encasing it within a circle, to represent the cycles of change beginning and ending at the same place, only to start again: eternity. This amulet is for those who wish to be reminded of and/or wish to harness the depth of this “simple” symbol.

The Silver Bullet Amulet

The Silver Bullet has an ever expanding lore: from the Lone Ranger to the “only thing that will bring down a ware-wolf”, the power of the Silver Bullet has been noted across the globe.

Silver Bullet

Silver itself is an interesting metal. It’s noted value is cherished in Judaic Law (Halakha). The lowest fiscal amount that a Jewish court, or Beth Din, can convene to adjudicate a case over is a shova pruta (value of a Babylonian pruta coin).

Silver has been long used in talismanic purposes: noted to be a “Lunar” metal, it tends to “hold” strong emotion thus able to hold and keep a “charge” easily. Many of the Lunar seals of Solomon are made of silver, and because of it’s properties, other talisman and amulet harness sterling silver as it’s main component.

The use of silver in a bullet bestows upon the purity of purpose: when the Lone Ranger fires his silver bullet, he is eliminating evil by the Pure Intent of Justice. In the Grim’s Fairy Tale: The Two Brothers they use a silver bullet to bring down an “Evil Witch” who was noted a “Bullet Proof” (please note: in my opinion should the Witch have been one of good intent, the bullet would have not harmed her, thus speaking to the purity of the weapon interacting with the impurity of the Witch’s Focus of Will. This is a good point to consider when focusing your own will!)

The Silver Bullet Amulet is for those who are focusing their intent in the elimination of evil in their lives: within and without. If you would like to learn more about the silver bullet, please visit the Silver Bullet Web page

Upon occasion I find it an honor to work with talented people. Bandora is most certainly one of them. Rev. Dr. Jessica Bandora Fox (aka Bandora) is an ordained interfaith minister, Doctor of Metaphysics and Divinity Universal Usui Reiki Master among many other talents. Some time ago she requested I create a special piece of her own design: an image of The Goddess.

In her words:

“The design was created shortly after I founded the business of providing spiritual products and services to the New Age and Pagan community to represent the type of service that I provide. The Goddess symbolizes the spiritual/deity component, my totem animal is dragonfly and it represents me as a representative of spirituality. The spiral in the center represents the constant energy of creation and the crescent moon with the drops represents a shower of blessings.”

Goddess of Blessings

Her current dedications have pulled her away from perusing jewelry design, however we wanted this amulet be made available to those who are drawn to it.

I now am honored to present: The Goddess of Blessings.
She is 1 1/2” tall with a bail behind her head for your chain or cord.

To learn more about this amulet, please visit the Goddess of Blessings Page.

Shee: The Light Bearer

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on November 30, 2010
Posted in: Celtic Jewelry, Celtic Lore, Druid Jewelry, Sculpture. Tagged: Celtic Christmas Fairy, Celtic lore sculpture, Celtic Yule Fairy, Christmas Fairy, Fairy of light sculpture, Fairy sculpture, Light Fairy, Yule Fairy. 1 Comment

It is said in the elder days of Celtic Lore there was a fairy who carried the light through the longest night of the year. When the last rays of light dissipates into Yule’s dusk, it is a fairy: a Shee who takes up the light and carries it until Dawn, seen flitting through the woods and meadow from dusk till dawn, just beyond reach. If one is full of despair and sees a flash of light bringing Hope, then it was one of the Shee: The Light Bearer. Never resting, always fleeting just beyond reach.

The Light Bearer

As with many of the old ways, the concept is made manifest through our own efforts. Lighting a candle that will last through out the night, or the lighting of the Yule Log for a fire to last until dawn: preserving the Light through the Dark Time of the year, thus we become Bearers of Light for each other, preserving the Truth, Honor and keeping a Home with Hospitality and Good Cheer.

In honor of this Noble Being, I have created a small statue of the Light Bearer. Wings in mid flight she holds a lantern before her thus projecting the Truth in her Path. This is a full, 3-Dimensional solid bronze sculpture (A heavy one!): 2 1/4″ by 7/8″ by 5/8″. Suspended from a bail between the wings intended to be hung as an ornament, harnessed as a ward against sadness, a bringer of Joy and Prosperity.

To learn more about the Light Bearer, please visit her special page.
