Gardnerian Pentacle Amulet

I have created a series of Pentacles in my line of jewelry. In “Pentacles as Amulets”: the five pointed star is found in nature; reproduced it in art, architecture and jewelry for centuries. From early times, the meaning has been consistent: the five points represent the various active and passive principals in the universe and reflected in human nature.

A Little Background:

In the 1880s, a group of influential individuals in England founded “The Golden Dawn”: and became an international organization dedicated to the research, understanding and practice of the world’s metaphysical “sciences and philosophies”. Before this group existed, the studies of the Tarot, Astrology, Qabalah and many others were separate, scattered and “incomplete”; (or so our texts have recorded of this period in history). The Golden Dawn as an organization sent their members all over the world to record, study and master the practices of the Occult (the study of what is “hidden”) for their use.

As what usually what happens amongst intelligent individuals in an organization, there were different opinions and splintered into a variety of different groups. One of their youngest and head strong was Aleister Crowley. Much of his exploits have been recorded elsewhere, but leave us to say his road was a hard one. In his youth he took great delight in poking fun at the establishment (including the Dawn itself!) not really taking into account it would have been better off to age more gently, the Dawn shattered over a series of quakes from the misunderstanding of all of it’s members, – with Crowley’s assistance.

Aleister Crowley’s life was a roller coaster of experience, decisions and it’s consequences. In his old age met and befriended Gerald Gardner. Their friendship has been romanticized in story and song over the years, but the culmination was that the lore learned and developed by Crowley was passed down to Gerald Gardner (amidst other resources) – including a very Jungian perspective of the personality and the importance of understanding one’s “Dark Side”; (please note: “Dark Side” used here pertains to the inner desires of the flesh and spirit which is selfish or otherwise encased in fear or other disabling motivations). Jung was a champion of facing one’s Dark Side and is best illustrated in popular metaphor in Star Wars when Luke Skywalker faced ”the dark side” with the aide of Yoda (Yod – the hand of god in the Hebrew alphabet associated with “The Hermit” of the Tarot).

To his credit, Gerald Gardner when founding his Gardnerian Tradition included in his symbols the Gardnerian Pentacle: a symbol illustrating the inverted five point star in the center of the larger pentacle with the single point up.

A quick comment:

It should be noted here the Gardnerian Tradition is vast. Since it’s founding in the mid 20th century many branches have evolved producing variations in practice and group structure. From region to region there are differences. Because it’s nature is an oral tradition – much is handed down from teacher to student. Thanks to print and now the internet, there is a movement to regulate the lessons, rites, songs and symbols of the faith, however the resistance to homogenize the faith is powerful and for good reason. Much of the study of the Occult depends on one’s perspective and ability to interact with their fellows and environment. Different people have different ways of expression.

This particular design is used by some circles and not in others – this is by no means their “official symbol” – indeed it is but one of many and should be viewed as such. There are several circles who have not used this pentacle for a variety of reasons; one is because of the confusion concerning the reversed pentacle within the larger one. Because of extremely bad press and an uninformed Hollywood, many people have considered any inverted pentagram is about Satan. The Gardnerian Tradition doesn’t include Satan in their pantheon – Satan is of the Christian Religion not Gardnerian at all. To hold the Gardnerians accountable for this is perverse and completely inappropriate; and yet when faced with the outer communities misconceptions folks tend to modify their own activities to avoid problems. The decision to include this particular amulet is up to the High Priest or High Priestess involved. In some cases it is not even considered.

Case in point: when Hitler stole the Swastika from the Hindi tradition. A symbol meaning the “Spiraling out from the core of the Divine” was perverted to refer to Nazis; the Hindi traditions who used it for thousands of years had to ease off from their use lest they be accused of something they have no connection. So it is in popular culture, as narrow minded people continue to pervert symbols and language, more and more people are confused with what is actually being said and done.

About this Amulet:

This Gardnerian Pentacle Amulet is sometimes offered to members symbolizing an achieved state of being: able to contain the knowledge of spiritual oppression; thus: transcending it. In some circles, the only ones who wear this amulet have mastered themselves with the ability to “change their minds”: in other words: turn depression to a state of bliss, convert one’s own anger to calm, break unproductive and unhealthy patterns of one’s life. It is not just to “face one’s fears”, but to rise above them.

As with all of my jewelry, this piece is created as a “blank” and holds no “charge” in of itself. The piece must be blessed by the person either gifting it or by the person who receives it. More information concerning the Gardnerian Pentacle my be found in my website.

Custom Wave Wedding Ring

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on January 22, 2011

An important step in planning One’s wedding is getting the right ring. The majority of rings available are mass produced or look that way: “fine jewelry” is considered “classic” in the jewelry industry. A very simple design: a basic shank with a stone on top. If you look, you will find a few variations on the theme, perhaps a little scroll work is added to the head (that which holds the stone in place); but when looking for something unique, it really is difficult to find a ring that is a one-of-a-kind piece unless you have someone make it for you “custom”. Even then when presented with options, a jeweler is procuring a shank, head and stone from a catalog and assembling it for you.

I was asked to create a custom ring for a Bride, however she wanted something both unique and simple in design. Quite a challenge because of the vast number of designs out there. After much discussion, renderings were created and rejected, until finally the lady decided on a concept: a very simple wave cresting over the finger: minimalist, no fancy head, no prongs. She wanted it to look like the surf had caught a stone in it crest.

Custom Wave Wedding Ring

The design was approved and I then carved the piece making the setting a combination of channel and bezel. The white gold architecture is minimal allowing the amethyst to be seen easily in full view in parts, buried in the gold in others as a wave would crash around the stone.

The Custom Wave Wedding Ring
was created for the Bride without a mold taken; a one-of-a-kind piece for a one-of-a-kind Lady. I heard from her husband who says she is willing to present her finger at a moment’s notice, often showing him, saying “have you seen my ring?”

I received an email form a professor in Massachusetts
who was preparing for a special announcement:
Sravanti Viadya was to take the final leap towards her PhD.
As a special gift for this important event I was commissioned
to create a three dimensional model of a special Protein.

Jeanne sent me images of the protein
with the hope I could create a relief
(one sided sculpture) for an amulet,
however she said
“if you can make it three dimensional, that would be better”.
Better is better,
so I made it as a full 3D sculpture.
Shown here in 24k gold.

She was presented with the necklace
when she “defended” her paper
and immediately used it as a teaching aide
to explain the science behind it.

The Spark Ring

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on January 19, 2011
Posted in: Custom Jewelry, Rings. Tagged: Custom Garnet Ring, Custom Ring, One of a kind Ring, The Spark Ring. Leave a comment

From the beginning, Amulets by Merlin has provided a service: special pieces designed either by or for those in need of special jewelry and sculpture. Upon occasion I have the honor to develop these images into amulets and talismans inspired by visions.

Last Fall George Clark (the leader of the Spiritual Architect Movement) approached me with an image which came to him in a dream: The Spark.

As he put it:

“This main symbol on the face of the ring is called “The Spark” and as a whole represents the Spark of life, thought, idea and creation. The outside points represents the 4 directions (North, East, South, West) and also the explosion of thought and intent. The outer most circle surrounding the stone represents our connectedness to each other and all things around us. The intersecting lines represent our different paths that we all travel toward… The inner most circle which represents enlightenment.”

The Spark ring - front

This one of a kind ring was specially made to be both chunky and light. He lives in a climate which can be pretty hot and humid, so his request was to design the ring with “air flow”, so I modified the ring to have a stout shank (the band around the finger) and an air channel in the inside of the ring. On the flanks of the shank I have opened passages around The Spark symbols to provide air flow to the shank and to the head (top portion of the ring). The head of the ring is domed on the inside, raising the mass of the ring from the finger.

The Spark Ring - back

Because of the design’s requirements to have The Spark symbol over the stone, I have devised the stone to be set from the interior of the ring. An Almandine Garnet was selected, however I wanted to provide him the option to change out the stone. In order to do this I created a watch-back setting behind the stone to lock it into place. With the aide of a jeweler, he can change out the stone for a different one with no damage to the ring itself. The Spark “cage” is sculpted over the stone and provides a shield of protection of the garnet.

The Custom Phoenix Amulet

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on January 17, 2011
Posted in: Amulets, Custom Jewelry. Tagged: Custom Phoenix amulet, Phoenix, Phoenix Amulet, Phoenix from the ashes, Phoenix jewelry, Rising Phoenix. 2 Comments

A gentleman asked me to make an amulet for him.
In his youth he used to watch “the Phoenix”
and fell in love with the amulet worn by the star.
The Show itself was a “one hit wonder” beginning and ending on 1982.
The show followed the discovery and missions
of an ancient astronaut discovered within a sarcophagus,
unearthed from a Peruvian tomb.

Custom Phoenix Amulet

Custom Phoenix Amulet

After searching the web for someone who may provide a copy for him,
he discovered the original makers of the piece went out of business
and the piece is no longer available.
Then he found me.
I did the research and found very few images of the amulet,
every one of them blurry,
distorted,
low rez.
Not a lot to go on.

I am very sensitive to re-creating other people’s designs,
being as I create original and unique pieces myself.
After some long discussion with him concerning this point,
I decided to take on the task with the understanding
it will be my “interpretation” of the design,
rather than an exact copy of the piece.
Being as the images were blurry and distorted,
it wasn’t too difficult to add my own flair.

The theme is simple:
the circle with the triangle represents the element of fire
(a classic symbol widely used in artwork)
and a phoenix rises from the flames.
I sculpted and cast each separate carving:
the Geometrical shape is of bronze,
the actual phoenix is in Sterling Silver,
all mounted an a heavy rope chain.
The over all shape is similar,
but the phoenix is different from the original.

This was made as a one of a kind Phoenix Amulet,
no mold was take for reproduction
and now resides on the bearer of the noble bird.

The Wand – Cane

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on January 16, 2011
Posted in: Wands. Tagged: custom magic wand, custom magick wand, custom walking stick, Custom wand, hidden wand, magic wand, magick wand, wand and walking stick. 1 Comment

Some time ago Skyler contacted me about a special project.
He has made his circle’s emblem for him over the years,
however he wanted a special piece piece made for him: a Wand.
Over the years I have made several,
each a special commission designed for the person’s needs.

Skyler was no exception,
after multiple emails and phone conversations
he developed his ideas in several drawings:
Labradorite as a pummel, set into a cluster of his emblem,
the wands handle was to be composed of several bands.
The actual Heart of the wand was to be of a wood which pulls his local environment:
he decided on manzanita.
Being in the Las Vegas area,
one of the local woods which grows in his area is the very gnarly wood.
The business end is a stone he selected for his own purposes.

Wand

Wand

To protect the wand
he wanted a sheath it could slide into and carry with him
on the long trek into the wilderness.
So to accomplish this we decided on a copper tube
with a threaded top for the wand to screw into.
He then sent me sketches and the wood he selected
for the heart and give me instructions to augment the design as I saw fit.

To begin with the over all patterning of the heart was to be of a serpent:
to carry the theme throughout the design
I incorporated snakes binding the handle on each end:
pulling the personal symbols into the piece
and then extending into the coupling of the wand to the walking stick.

Pummel

Pummel

The handle itself is a series of snakes
wrapped around the rod in a clock wise fashion
(we are north of the equator.
In this hemisphere one uses the “local current” and go with the flow).
Instead of biting it’s tail,
the serpents are crossing their tails:
one way it draws,
the other way it pushes).
Each serpent holds a diamond in it’s head:
the third eye, providing in inference of Vision and clarity in one’s work.
Between Skyler’s emblems are two seven point stars,
one pointing up and one pointing down,
again allowing a push and draw.

In order to expand the design
I set the tails of four snakes into the collar
which then loop into each other.
Because I was dealing with a multilevel design,
parts of which are (shall we say)
inferred into the negative space of the center,
the flair out about the wand’s heart.
Each piece was sculpted in wax,
then cast into bronze,
mounted on brass tubing and sealed with sterling silver.
For the tube of copper,
I cast a footing in bronze which holds several serpent and personal symbols.
The shaft was the hand engraved
– diamond cut strokes for light to flash when seen in firelight.

The base of the Cane

The base of the Cane

The last revision to the design was to include his personal seal to the sheath;
hand engraving the monogram on the outside of the tube.

Once all the parts were calculated,
carved and cast;
the next step was to shape the heart of the wand.
I removed the layers of bark so characteristic of manzanita,
providing depth and focus for Skyler’s primary design.
Enhancing the drawing by allowing the natural color of the wood
to accent the flow of the wand.
At the tip of the wand I carved jaws in the wood,
hallowed out in the shape of the stone for setting:
the last step in activating the piece.

Skylers scroll was set into the handle’s tube
and the the emblems were used as prongs for setting the stone.
The inside of the wand’s collar it is threaded
for the wand to be placed securely into the sheath.

With all of my work, each piece is designed for potential,
not “pre-charged”.
Each amulet, talisman, seal, wand, atheme (etc)
holds the emblems and symbols of the people who commission the to charge themselves.
In this case toe process of placing the stone
in the tip was the moment of activation.
All of the serpents,
seals and symbols are there for him to bless,
enhance, and use.

I provide the conduit.

The Sunflower Amulet

Shortly after I founded Amulets by Merlin in the 1980s, I was commissioned with a project: to develop a piece combining the two basic images used in the Sun and Star cards of Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot Deck. In the Sun card the main focus is the Sunflower: a common symbol harnessed in many other Tarot Decks, but this one was special: twelve segments, each divided into two aspects. This represents the houses of the Zodiac divided into their active and passive principals. In Crowley’s deck he also used the seven pointed star to symbolize the the Star Card: associated with Tazaddi (a Hebrew letter) often considered in Qabalah as “the fish Hook”, meaning the process of meditation is akin to lowering a “mental fish hook” plunged into the depths of the Great Unconsciousness (Akesha).

The Sunflower Amulet
Sunflower Amulet

Combining the aspects of these two ideas produces the simultaneous process of seeing all of creation in all of it’s glory and yet being “passive” enough to understand it’s subtleties.

The dear Lady suggested I place this in my line of jewelry so the virtues of the piece may spread to others. This I have done and so I present to you one of my first commissions and amulets in my line:
The Sunflower Amulet

Merlin’s Om Collection

The Om is a combination
of the first and last letter
of the Sanskrit alphabet.
In “western terms”
it may be considered
the “Alpha and Omega”
with similar meanings:
it encompasses the first and last sounds,
ideas, manifestations of all things.
Unlike the Greek equivalent,
it dose not refer simply to the first and last,
it encompasses everything in between.

Merlin's Om Collection

Merlin’s Om Collection

In previous blogs
I have gone into detail
with more about the Om (Aum):
featuring the pendant and earrings.

I am pleased to announce
Merlin’s Om Collection:
you may purchase the Amulet and earrings
as a set
with the option of chain in your choice of length.
The ancient Sanskrit glyph “Om” featured in this collection encompasses all things .
This set is for those who wish to be reminded
of and/or harness the depth of this “simple” symbol.

Om Earrings

In the Sixties “Om”
(or Aum”)
was placed in pop culture through out America and Europe.
Even the Moody Blues even wrote a song “Aum”
in the finale of
“In search of the Lost Chord”
of their Threshold series.
Even as our pop-culture moved on to other things,
Om continued to be what it is:
a very sacred and complex idea.
In an earlier blog
I wrote a bit about it’s use and history.
I created my own version of the Om Amulet
by encasing it within a circle.

Om Earrings

Om Earrings

To accompany the Om Amulet,
I have also developed the Om Earrings.
The symbol is made with a small bail within the top of the Sanskrit word,
then I added a jump ring to suspend it with a earring finding.
The added jump ring gives the glyph additional movement
as it adorns the ear.
Flanked on either side with an OM,
one is surrounded with eternity and peace.
These earrings are for those who wish to be reminded of
and/or wish to harness the depth of this “simple” symbol.

The Large Awen Amulet

A few years ago I created Jewelry for Isaac Bonewits. He created renderings of several designs and sent them to me to create for his special line of Jewelry. One of them is the Awen.

The Large Awen
Large Awen Amulet

In his words:
“The sign of “the Three Rays” is used by members of the United Ancient Order of Druids, the Ancient Order of Druids, the Order of Bards Ovates; Druids, and many other followers of Druidry. It can be seen as symbolizing Sky Father Energy in balance with the Earth Mother energy of the Druid Sigil, as well as any of a thousand other sets of three ideas.”

The design itself is a wreath of oak leaves, three staves emanating from three Acorns. The bail from which to hang the amulet is also an oak leaf curled to hold the chain or cord. On the reverse side of the “signature” of the artist: “Merlin” or Kirk McLaren of Amulets by Merlin.

After creating the original Awen I have received several requests for a larger version of the piece: same wreath of leaves, acorns and staves: but larger. I now present to you the newest of Isaac’s line: the Large Awen.

Two Awens

When Isaac was still with us he traveled with the amulets and his books and other items; he even created a special portion of his website to feature the work. Since his passing into the Summerland I have continued to produce his line for him. For each piece purchased Isaac’s Widow receives a royalty to help through difficult times and encourage in efforts to promote good will and clarity to the world. To learn more about Isaac Bonewits, his writings and more, you may visit his website.

To learn more about the new, larger version of Isacc’s Awen, please visit my web-page featuring the Large Awen Amulet.
