Over the Winter, I have continued to design new pieces, some are focused on musical themes.

Music Mandala

Music Mandala Amulet

My studies in the past have included the love of the repeated patters of the Mandala: typically a circle pattern used in Hinduism and Buddhism. The word “Mandala” is actually a Sanskrit word describing a symbol representing the Universe. In this case it is a bit of a play on words: when one plays a musical piece in western music, the grand staff holds a description of the “rules of the game” (so to speak) composed of a treble clef, a bass clef and the symbol of “common time” (4/4) repeated in a circle sixteen times in a filigree style. I have provided a “back bail” behind the design to give the appearance of the piece “floating” on your chain or cord.

The Music Mandala is a celebration of music and looks a little like a snowflake, so it may cross over to a winter design, however it also as a floral look, boarding into spring and summer. The texture of the piece provides places for light to flash and catch in it’s design, the filigree provides a lighter feel to the piece, as music itself rides the air.

New!!! The Large Dagda’s Shield

A few years ago I created Jewelry for Isaac Bonewits. He created renderings of several designs and sent them to me to create for his special line of Jewelry. One of them is Dagda’s Shield. Over the years I have received several requests for a larger more “masculine” version.

http://www.amuletsbymerlin.com/Dagda-s-Shield-Amulet-p/ib-8.htm

Large Dagda’s Shield Amulet

The Original version is 7/8 of an inch, this amulet is much larger: 1 1/2” and much heavier. The detail in the snake skin is more pronounced, yet in keeping with Isaac’s original Design – and like the original, it has my signature, his name and the Rune of Dagda on the back. A bail is placed behind the piece for your chain or cord.

Isacc Bonewits’ description of his design in his own words:

“This talisman is meant to be used with a daily self-protection spell from Isaac’s book The Pagan Man.
“Dagda behind me, Dagda before me
Dagda to my left, Dagda to my right
Dagda beneath me, Dagda above me
Dagda in quiet, Dagda in danger
Dagda in the hearts of all that love me
Dagda in the mouth of friend and stranger.
“I bind unto myself the name, the strong name of the Dagda,
By invocation of the same, the Three in One, and One in Three,
The mightiest of all the Gods, Father of the Queen of Arts,
The Supreme Knower, Lord of Fire, and King of Druids.

“This silver or bronze talisman has been made by Merlin of Amulets by Merlin, based on the above design by Isaac Bonewits (includes the ogham letters for “Dagda” on the back). The design (inspired by Ian Corrigan) has a Celtic triple spiral as found in the Boyne River in Ireland, plus three awens, with a snake wrapped around the edge of the shield. The shield as a whole is curved to cover one-sixth of a sphere to aid in visualizing it at all six directions.”

While is is indeed featured in his book “The Pagan Man”, it is not exclusively for men.  This amulet is focused on protection and may be harnessed by men and women alike, and yes: children.

Isaac wrote the book “Real Magic” in the ’70. In my opinion it is one of the most important book on the subject, offering a point of view which sheds a lot of the typical stereotypes one finds in the old tomes and even the more recent “recipe books” about magic still written in this era. He later wrote several more volumes about ritual, Druidism and with his Widow: Phaedra Bonewits a book called “Real Enegry”.

In his honor, a part of the sales of his designs goes to her, including this new Large Dagda’s Shield. To get your copy of this piece please visit my Large Dagda’s Sheild Amulet Page. To review more of Isacc Bonewits Designs, please go to my page: Designs by Isaac Bonewits.

Amethyst Garden Ring

A friend of mine suffered a broken piece of jewelry. She loved the stone but the ring was far too fragile to hold up under the riggers of using her hands on a daily basis. She is a professional body worker and required a design strong enough to withstand pushing muscles, moving equipment and a lot more. The goal was to create a durable ring of elegant design ~ reflecting her love of health an beauty.

Amethyst Garden Ring

The result: a custom, one-of-a-kind Garden Ring of Amethyst and Sterling Silver. Vines wrap around the stone with leafy foliage winding down the shank. The ring has many hidden open voids to allow light to bounce around the stone: set into a sculpted cage of leaves, prongs textured with veins. The shape of the stone (a triangle) is focused to “extend” beyond the hand, allowing the flow of design to harness the shape of the stone. Now in a private collection – no mold was taken for reproduction: truly a unique ring. If you want something like it, please visit my how to order custom page.

Be sure to visit my Website: Amulets by Merlin and see my collection of rings!

Custom Crocodile Money Clip

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on September 10, 2016
Posted in: Crocodile Jewelry, Money Clips. Tagged: Crocodile Jewelry, Crocodile Money Clip, custom Crocodile Money Clip, one of a kind Crocodile Money Clip, spring loaded Crocodile Money Clip, sterling silver Crocodile Money Clip, unique Crocodile Money Clip. 2 Comments

Some years ago I created a Dragon Money Clip for a fan of the Movie Face-off. While he loved the clip in the movie, we could not create an “Exact copy” due to copyright reasons. After a little time, I developed a larger version of the clip to grasp bill a little deeper into the fold of cash. This inspired a variety of Skull Money clips and even larger versions of the Dragon Money Clips.

Last Spring a gentleman in England asked about a Crocodile Money Clip with the same spring action as the other working jaw pieces I have made int the past. John Aka Mrtlookalike, an American living in the UK who wanted a bit of America on him at all times. He loved the look of the Crocodile and desired a piece which could be an heirloom, something to be passed down through the generations. In his instructions, he wanted it to look as real as possible – the skin texture and eyes with his family’s name written under the jaw.

Custom Crocodile Money Clip

The result of a lot of carving turned out to be over 10 ounces of sterling and after searching for the right kind stones for the eyes and extremely detailed piece. While I suggested a holster due to the weight, he has insisted it fits comfortably in his pocket.

The Crocodile Money clip is a one-of-a-kind piece, no mold was taken for reproduction. The stones set from the interior of the piece to give a life-like eyes. His family name is hand engraved in the only smooth portion of the sculpture. Solid, sturdy piece should hold up through decades of wear. This piece is now residing in John’s private collection (probably in his pocket!). An American Crocodile in England holding currency in his toothy grin.

If you would like something like this, you need only ask.

How I found The Klu Fairy

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on August 6, 2016
Posted in: Amulets, Clueless, Help for the Clueless, Humor, Jewelry design. Tagged: Amulets by Merlin, Clue by Four, clue coin, Clue Fairy, Clueless, houmor jewelry, humor amulets, Starwood. Leave a comment

In the mid Nineties
I attended a festival called “Starwood”
located in upper state New York.
This festival is a celebration of counter cultures of all kinds,
what ever branch of tree you are up in.
They celebrate life through dance, song, drumming, body painting,
costumes and what have you,
pure fun – for most of us.
Some folks consider it a refuge for the Clueless…

One of the problems we face in our lives
when we choose to work in environments
where people are on vacation.
I discovered this early when I worked in Yosemite in my youth:
people on vacation had spent the better part of a year
grinding away at their jobs
and finely have a week or two to blow off some steam
only to discover that when they packed their suitcase,
the usually forget their common sense.

Starwood is a prime example of this:
only to an extreme.
Perhaps it is the kind of tension we carry within ourselves
while we work so hard only to find release when we have time off.
Perhaps it is the opportunity to spend a few care-fee days
without having to punch a clock.
Perhaps it is because Starwood has a huge bar that never seems to close
(although I actually saw it closed on several occasions,
only to discover that people have bottles stashed in their tents).

Never the less
I found myself for several years attending Starwood,
each year
more and more silliness occurred
in high fashion and full color.
After setting up my booth and living space
(we spent two weeks there,
attending the festival that is the week before Starwood:
Sirius Rising, more of a family event than Starwood)
only to discover that because of the contour of the field
people mistook the break between my tents
as a pathway to the restroom.

Through the day and night
folks stumbled through our encampment,
sometimes even waking through our camp fire
to find relief.
After a couple of days of this and following much debate,
M’Lady Tony decided:

~ she had had enough ~

She sought out a large stick and wrote with a heavy marker
KLU by 4
and drove it into the middle of the now worn path
and glared at the first attempted trudging through our encampment.
The second attempt was made by an unwary,
yet fully bladdered man
only to find M’Lady step up
and threaten him with a sound beating
with a Clue-by-four.
This did not go un-noticed.
I had tried to appease her with a few words
about the vacationing man and his lack of brains in his luggage,
but to no avail.
She was Determined!
Later she decided to post a guard at our “gate”:
a small waif of a girl in a fairy costume
planted herself across the path with the clue-by-four across her knees
and a scowl that would send most smart people running.
There were several people over the days ahead
who found themselves being herded about with the stick
and eventually
(the last two days of such “coaxing”)
we were able to have a meal in our encampment
without dirt flying into our food
due to a hast trip to the lue.

I was Inspired.

The Clue Fairy Amulet

The Clue Fairy Amulet

In ’95
(or there-a-bouts)
I introduced to my line of Jewelry
“The Clue Fairy”
She is a tiny yet well detailed creature with tattered wings,
a baseball cap turned around on her head
and shouldering the Clue-by-Four:
ready to give you a clue!
However
I felt that it was not enough.
I also created the Clue Coin.

The Clue Coin

The Clue Coin

A tiny coin of some girth and a portrait of a clueless “DUDE”
(sometimes referred to as the “Dude Coin”).
Although it is only good for half a clue,
it is well worth carrying.
Many have found that by holding the clue coin on them
they are armed against their offspring:
“Dad, you simply don’t have a clue!”
but indeed they are wrong!
Present them with the coin to prove it!
If you use three coins to roll the I Ching,
you already start with a clue and a half:
fortune is already smiling on you!

Over the past many years
the stories of the clue fairy have become legendary.
I have been able to offer help for the clueless
at science fiction conventions,
festivals and gatherings
through-out the eastern seaboard.
Doing my part to raise the bar
or perhaps waive the clue-by-four about
for those in need!

Handfasting Jewelry from Amulets by Merlin

For centuries,
Handfasting was practiced in Northern Europe
as a primary stage to marriage
still practiced into modern times.

“Handfasting” is derived from the verb
“to handfast”,
used for making a contract of marriage.
The couple is promised for “a year and a day”
as they hand-festa
(Norse:” to strike a bargain by joining hands”).
The rite varies between practitioners
but usually incorporates the participants
to bind their hands together with ribbon or chord;
a physical extension of promises made and kept.

Handfasting Bracelet

Handfasting Bracelet

Using a design of two strands creating a combined knot
stronger than the sum of it’s parts.
The bracelets are to be put on during the ceremony
and worn for the “year and a day”;
then cherished as a keepsake when the marriage is preformed.

Many have chosen the bracelets for handfasting
and the rings for the marriage.
The Handfasting Rings
hold the same knot work design
for those people that find the bracelet too cumbersome.

Lovers Knot Ring

Lovers Knot Ring

I have made another version of the Lovers Knot,
giving it a more “Celtic” feel:
weaving the knot work in to a more intricate design.

Celtic Lovers Knot Ring

If you are looking for a custom piece to be created for you,
I can design a knot work for your Wedding
or Handfasting that would be a “two of a kind” set.

The Stolen Cart

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on April 26, 2016
Posted in: Commentary. Tagged: Festival stories, Flight of the Valkyries, The Amazon, The Story Teller, Wagner. Leave a comment

This reminds me very little of a story

The Story Teller Amulet

When I was on the circuit, selling my jewelry at various Festivals and such; I made friends with a great number of people. One of which I will refer to as The Amazon. She was a powerhouse. For many years The Amazon was contracted to run security at many of the festivals we attended. Strong, stalwart and True, she would go about the festival in her golf cart making sure we were safe and on the look out for those who would preform mischief. Accompanied by her faithful companion: her dog would ride shot gun as she would cruse about. Her golf cart was equipped with speakers so she could listen to music and when she was in a hurry would turn it on to Wagner’s “Flight of the Valkyries”.

One Event we were on the top of a mountain shaped like a table top for gatherings and such. Some of the attendees were a bit tired of The Amazon cruising by, telling them to pick up their trash and other directives. On a lark one of them discovered The Amazon’s Dog actually learned how to ride and steer the golf cart, and so while the Amazon was busy, one of the culprits coaxed her dog to sit in the driver’s seat, switched on Wagner’s fateful theme and off went the cart, dog and all.

I recall a small crowd of people laughing hysterically as The Amazon chased her faithful companion across the field, heading for a cliff. She did finally catch up as the cart bogged down in a ditch, however the Amazon did in turn chase about a few of the culprits who were punished with “noogies” (her sense of humor was a grand as her laugh).

In the Gathering which followed, her dog often drove about in the cart under the Amazon’s watchful eye. Each time I hear the Valkyries I still envision the flight of the Amazon, fleet of feet chasing down a golf cart toward impending doom.

Amulets by Merlin celebrates 35 years!

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on April 15, 2016
Posted in: Jewelry design. Tagged: Amulets by Merlin, Jewelery design, Kirk McLaren. Leave a comment

This weekend I am celebrating my 30th year!

Amulets by Merlin

The story of the beginning of Amulets by Merlin actually takes place over a decade earlier. I have been interested in the making of jewelry and sculpture for most of my life. In the early days of High school (1971 I was in a Madrigal group, singing A cappella with a small host of other students. I wanted to make something for the girls to go with their formal gowns. For a few years before I have been beading and creating beads and charms for my own amusement as well as sculpting in clay. For the Madrigal group I decided to forge ahead and fuse bent wire in the shape of the word: “Mads” to be hung on chains. The girls loved them and thus I began a journey in discovering their fabrication end of jewelry making.

As life does for so many of us, I found myself getting married and taking on jobs such as construction and later working as a draftsman, truck driver and other forms of employment. I continued to focus on the arts in sculpture and painting, but still attempted to make rings, and necklaces.

In 1985 I refocused my efforts to to transform images of the Tarot into small sculptures. Because of this fascination I attended (a year later) an exhibition of La Lioue jewelry. I was inspired and in mid April of 1986, I took out my first business license and began to form my own line of jewelry. I then began my public presence in a shop called “The Crystal Cave” in Costa Mesa, California with the blessings of Karen Tate. Slowly I built up my tools and shop.

After a severe accident, I found myself no longer able to drive a truck and so focused on jewelry design full time in 1990, the next year I received training at the Gemological Institute in California.  My first big festival was Marshal Scotties Renaissance Fair in Southern California. After several festivals on the west coast I moved to Virginia. By 1992 I completed the jewelry line for the Tarot, also developed a lot more featuring God and Goddess images, natural themes such as trees and flowers. I had also taken on a number of custom pieces. By the time the digital age came into being, better photographs were available to me and by 1998 I started my first online presence, all the while attending art festivals, gatherings and other events up and down the East coast.

After decades of being on the road, I have now focused more on custom designs and staying in my shop as much as possible. You may still view my work at the Mystic Moon in Norfolk Virginia or on line at Amuletsbymerlin.com.

It has been a very long and strange road, indeed. In a couple of weeks I plan to release a new piece! Watch for it, it’s a big one!

Bee Flat Amulet

A bee rests on a musical notation: the Flat. This carving of a bee poised on the flat sign may be worn as a pendant: the jump ring is hung from her antennae.

The Flat Symbol is used in musical notation to indicate the note being played is to “go down” (in tone) one half step. In a key signature, a single B Flat is the key of “F” or “D” minor.

I have a hive in my yard and have been fascinated by the Bees tending our gardens over the past couple of years. This is my First “Bee Jewelry” offering.

http://www.amuletsbymerlin.com/Bee-Flat-Amulet-p/mu01.htm

One inch tall, available in Silver or Bronze.

This musical amulet was originally designed as a gift I created for my piano students and the dear ones in my family for Yule.

After waiting a few months I have decided to offer this piece as a part of my musical line of jewelry.

To get yours, please visit my Bee Flat Amulet page,

More musical notation jewelry may be found on my Music Jewelry Page.

Awen Penannular Brooch from Amulets by Merlin

You may recall I have been making Isaac Bonewits designs in my jewelry line for some time.  I have recently developed his classic Druid Awen as a Brooch.

The Awen Isaac created is more than the simple dot and stave seen in the old writings: this is a wreath of oak leaves with the Mesopagan Druid symbol of the “three rays of light” emanating from three acorns and staves (like wood) completing the design.

Awen Penannular Brooch

I have augmented the piece by making it a functional Penannular Brooch.  the Brooch Frame is of knot work of my own making with a pin mounted and able to “travel” around the frame.

To learn how to use a Penannular Brooch and learn more about this new piece, please visit my page The Awen Penannular Brooch.
