Merlin’s Tarot ~ 3 ~ The Empress Amulet

The Empress combines
the Focus of the Magician and the Memory of the High Priestess.
Placing the Ideal Goal into an environment where it may grow and develop into an actuality.
The Hebrew letter attributed Her is Daleth: “the Door”.
Venus is Her symbol: the direct merging of Spirit (the circle)
and Matter (the Cross):
Love.

Empress Amulet

Empress Amulet
Venus
The Door
“Daleth”

In the Classical Rider Deck we see the Empress seated in a field of wheat,
she is pregnant.
The Empress is often referred to as “Mother Earth”
or “Gaia”;
the concepts that form around Her do not manifest
without touching the physical plane:
grounding (planting) them and nurturing them into fruition.
These images all focus on the necessary steps to making things happen:
focusing on one’s goals,
recalling the information needed to make things happen
and the necessary vision and commitment to move forward.
The Empress’ Door can swing both ways,
we are reminded that what we say and what we do matters;
it influences our lives and creations.

The Empress Amulet presents these things:
two hands lovingly hold a crystal ball;
within the ball is the image of Dalth:
the doorway of manifestation.
One must imagine and care for a thing before making it happen.
Below is a bundle of ripened wheat, symbolizing the fruition of the imagined goal.
In MetaPlace (now closed)
I have created an animated scene of a the Empress Amulet
set in a garden with wheat and other fruit of the land,
symbolizing the effort and care needed to produce anything worth doing.

When choosing to manifest an idea,
the Empress Amulet reminds us:
it takes visualization,
perseverance
and dedication to step over the threshold
from wanting something
and the love and commitment of making it happen.
The Empress Amulet is perfect for the Artist, Team leader,
Executive, anyone whose task it is to Manifest the Vision.
It is also for the Environmentalist:
the symbol of Gaia,
all things natural to the formation of Life on the Earth
is symbolized by the Empress Amulet.

The Empress Amulet may be used as a Talisman
or it may be used as a part of a Three dimensional Tarot Deck

Merlin’s Tarot ~ 2 ~ The High Priestess Amulet

The third “Key” of the Tarot is called the High Priestess:
the third emanation from the “source of all things”.
Within the Tarot, the High Priestess
(like the Fool and the Magi)
is a state of being rather than an actual person,
it represents the source of consciousness
the connection to our awareness.

High Priestess Amulet

High Priestess Amulet
Moon
The Camel
“Gimel”

In the classic image of the Rider Deck,
we find her seated in a garden flanked by the pillars
of form and force, mercy and severity.
The High Priestess is attributed to the letter Gimel,
known as “Camel” or “the ship of the dessert”;
inferring her constant motion,
the bringer of new awareness and perspectives.

The High Priestess Amulet hold these concepts:
like pillars: her arms stretch above,
using her own form to translate the Moon’s “unattainable image” into water
(consciousness)
flowing from her skirts.
Unattainable herself,
the High Priestess “Draws down the Moon”,
veiled by her hair: only her eyes may be seen.

High Priestess with meditation card

From her skirts flows “consciousness”,
becoming a stream surfacing where other water images emerge in the Tarot images.

In choosing the High Priestess Amulet,
one seeks a connection within one’s self to the source of all,
the memories of the collective unconsciousness
to better understand the world and live accordingly.
As the Fool is Youthful Enthusiasm and Instigator,
and the Magi is Focused Manifestation;
the High Priestess brings Self Awareness,
the Knowledge of Memory: the source of Wisdom.

For those who are looking for a larger version of the High Priestess,

Merlin’s Tarot ~ 1 ~ The Magi Amulet

The second of the Major Arcana is the Magician or Magi.
It is attributed to the letter Beth and referred to as “House” inferring a kind of containment.
Although it is indeed the second of the cards
it is given the number “one” and the rest of the Keys follow in succession.

The Magician Amulet

The Magi Amulet Mercury
Focus and Concentration
“Beth”

Magi Amulet

In the Classical Rider Deck is an image of a youth before a table.
Upon it: the Disk, Cup and Sword with his right hand above holding the wand
and his left hand point to the earth.
Attributed to Mercury,
the Magi is Spirit acting as communication between Matter and Persona:
lighting fast and with absolute celerity.

Unlike the Fool before him,
the Magi knows his purpose and harnesses himself to be the focus of his will:
“making it so”.
The Magi reviews the tools at hand
and makes his life manifest in the way he envisions it.

In MetaPlace (now closed)
I created a Virtual Garden that frames each of the Major Arcana.
For the Magi I have created an animation that illustrates
the gathering of energy and the focusing of intent.
The piece is suspended in air,
giving the impression that the process has not yet grounded
– in an every flowing process of manifestation.

In designing the Magi Amulet
I have stripped away everything that would distract one from the core meaning.
The image of the pointing hand:
focusing intent and making manifest one’s own potential.
Magi Amulet is to help one focus on one’s work,
study or bringing a project to fruition: manifesting one’s goals.

The Magi Amulet may be used as a Talisman
or it may be used as a part of a Three dimensional Tarot Deck

Merlin’s Tarot: 0 The Fool Amulet

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on August 9, 2015
Posted in: Amulets, Tarot. Tagged: aleph amulet, egg amulet, tarot fool, tarot jewelry, The Fool, The Tarot. 2 Comments

Each of the first 22 cards,
known as the Major Arcana,
are referred to as “Keys” to understanding ourselves
and our place in the world.
Each Key is an illustration of those concepts.
The first is “The Fool”
often referred to as “zero”:
Before Beginnings

The Fool Amulet
Air
Before Beginnings
“Alph”

In the classic version of the Rider Tarot
the image of a youth
who has been equipped with all the tools he needs to make a life for himself
hanging on the end of a pole over his shoulder,
as if unconcerned.
One hand holds a rose:
his passion
something that he is well familiar,
perhaps it is all he is concerned with.
Followed by his dog
he sets forth:
off a cliff ~

The Fool is attributed to Aleph:
the Ox
a being that pulls a cart
unconcerned as to where it is going:
a driving force
pulling us along
whether we are paying attention or not.

My interpretation of The Fool
Is the shape of an egg
with the letter
“Aleph”
embossed on the front.
To help one remember to keep a fresh outlook,
open to new experiences and ideas.
At times one needs to dismiss old habits,
confining perspectives
and take the leap of faith required
to move forward in one’s life.
This amulet is for those
who wish to break out of the old molds
and start anew.

The Fool Amulet may be used as a Talisman
or it may be used as a part of a Three dimensional Tarot Deck

Merlin’s The Tarot Casters – a three dimensional Tarot Deck

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on August 8, 2015
Posted in: Multi Faith, Tarot. Tagged: Francesco Marcolino da Forli, Tarot Cards, Tarot Decks, The Tarot, Three Dimensional Tarot, unique tarot decks. Leave a comment

The Tarot is often considered older than it’s apparent history.

Although no documents exist prior to the 18th century of the Tarot being used as an oracle, divination using similar cards may be found as early as 1540; The Oracles of Francesco Marcolino da Forli shows a simple method of divination using regular playing cards. In 1735 (The Square of Sevens) and 1750 (Pratesi Cartomancer) rudimentary divinatory meanings and lay outs for the Tarot may be found. The oldest surviving Tarot Cards are three early to mid 15th century sets, all made for members of the Visconti family, however their suites and Major Arcana are only similar in construction to what is viewed as the modern decks of the 20th and 21rst century. In the 1880s the Golden Dawn assembled many variations and mystical systems to produce a deck that was synchronized with multiple western and mid eastern traditions.

In my study of the Tarot I have focused on the Kabalah and Western European traditions as a basis of understanding the system. The Tarot represents several layers of perception to the world around us and how we interact and discover ourselves.

One day I accidentally dropped a deck of Tarot Cards and saw how they fell into a random pattern. Because of their shape I couldn’t see much of the deck as the cards were covering the images beneath and wondered how a reading would be done if one could see how the images would interface with each other. I made a decision to develop small sculptures focusing on the spiritual and metaphysical subjects, bringing these ideas to the hand and eye. I then undertook a labor to produce a Three Dimensional Tarot system completed in 1992: the Tarot Casters.

Tarot Caster Set
The Tarot Casters

The first of it’s kind: a three dimensional Tarot system;
Sculpted pieces of the Major Arcana dropped on a surface and read as they fall

The Tarot Casters comprises of the Major Arcana’s 22 concepts, each shape unique, each interpretation of the card an original design. I based the pieces on Hebrew letters assigned and extrapolated the classic design of the card. The result is a deck of 22 pieces that may be held in the hands and dropped on a surface. Then the querent looks at the random design and (like a Rorschach blot) interpret the design. The reader then interprets the shape by the sum of it’s components: the flow of element and concept from one piece to the other.

The response has been interesting. Many seasoned readers found the decks challenging, no longer relying on formula of basic layouts and key words. Several have referred to the system as “advanced”. Others new to the Tarot have found them quite easy, helping them rely on intuition and perception. The most remarkable recipient was a blind woman who then began to use the set professionally:

“For the first time I can use all of my Tarot Studies in readings!”

As I had created the Tarot Casters, I now produce each of the Tarot pieces are amulets,
more can be see on my Tarot Amulets Page

A project in this field is the Tarot Garden in MetaPlace (now closed). I created a Virtual Reality featuring the Tarot Casters as garden sculpture. Each piece is in its own environment including tone, animation and short videos to help illustrate the concept of each card in a new kind of environment. The first section is the Court Yard where one is introduced to the Garden with a series of helpful hints and instructions on how to interact. This includes a fully animated video that introduces the Tree of Life: the foundation of the Tarot as perceived by most Tarot Students of the 21rst century. From there it separates into three gardens, actually producing “the Fools Journey” as the Major Arana is sometimes referred to.

Here is a short video about the Tarot Garden of MetaPlace

That Tarot is a living system, we learn from the Tarot by discovering ourselves, other people and the environment that surrounds us. I invite you to examine my work and respond with your impressions.

Merlin’s Green Man Amulet

Posted in: Amulets, Celtic Jewelry, Celtic Lore, Druid Jewelry, Pagan Jewelry. Tagged: celtic amulets, celtic gods, Celtic Jewelry, Celtic Lore, Green Man Amulet, green man jewelry, green mane necklace, The Green Man. Leave a comment

The Green Man in western culture it is found primarily in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Found from the ruins of ancient times carved in stone, there are many variations: a man’s face with branches and leaves.

The Green Man Amulet

In modern times one can find renderings of the Green Man as an architectural form: paintings, sculpture and amulets; considered as a manifestation of youth, re-birth and rejuvenation. In the modern lore of western traditions it has been adopted as the first stage in a man’s life. The succession follows: the Green Man: the Youth; the Hunter: the Father and the Sage: the Wise Old Man. By wearing the Green Man Amulet, one is acknowledging this early stage and supporting the youth in ones own life, the vitality of those around them.

Using oak leaves and acorns to adorn the face, I have placed an opal in the forehead: signifying vision and possibilities. For those who want more than the amulet I have a necklace version: the Green Man hung on a chain of leaves linked together.

Merlin’s Skull Jewelry

Posted in: Money Clips, Skull Jewelry. Tagged: skull amulets, skull earrings, Skull Jewelry, Skull Money Clips, skull pendants, Skulls. 1 Comment

An entire line of jewelry based on the Skull:

Skull Money Clip

Beads to be woven into the hair for those that dread their follicles to a cord or used as dangles for woven rope or strings. Skull beads as charms for bracelets, necklaces and placed on their drums and other items. Attempting to be a versatile as possible, I have also created the Skull Chain: loops on each end that are then chained together for bracelets, necklaces, earrings and more.  For those who are more of a different look, I also make a Bunny Skull.

Skull money clips! One is simply a skull; other versions include stones in the eyes and a Jolly Roger: the skull with crossed swords. Each with a working jaw, spring loaded ready to hold your cash; I carry one myself and enjoy it immensely.

Merlin’s Small Winter Awen Amulet

The Awen is an ancient design used by the Druids of Olde.
This symbol has been recognized and harnessed by the Neo-Pagan movement
to symbolize the emanation of the Light,
brought into manifestation in the material world.
In his research Isaac Bonewits wrote about it’s use and lore:

In his words:

“The sign of “the Three Rays” is used by members of the United Ancient Order of Druids, the Ancient Order of Druids, the Order of Bards Ovates & Druids, and many other followers of Druidry. It can be seen as symbolizing Sky Father Energy in balance with the Earth Mother energy of the Druid Sigil, as well as any of a thousand other sets of three ideas.”

Here a new version of the Awen.

The Small Winter Awen Amulet

In the original design,
the central “ray” of the Awen is exposed,
here in the new Winter version,
the Holly covers the stave and it appears below.
This additional feature reflects the idea
of how the light is obscured in the Winter only to re-emerge “un-looked for”;
the triumph of the Light.
The pine cones and the staves match the cones with pine wood.

The Small Winter Awen is three quarters of an inch;
the bail and jump ring is above the cluster of berries
for it to be hung by a chain or cord.
If you wish, I can enamel the berries for a more festive look.

Merlin’s Coin for the Clueless

Posted by Amulets by Merlin on August 4, 2015
Posted in: Clueless, Humor. Tagged: bronze coin, clue by 4, Clue by Four, Clueless, Clueless Jewelry, Clueless talisman, KLU, klu by 4, klu by four, Klu Fairy, protect from clueless, the Dude. Leave a comment

A small bronze coin appears only to be the size of a dime,
but contained here in holds magical powers.
It is said
(by those who speak of such things)
the bearer of such a coin
has half a clue
as to what is going on in the world around them.
To verify this
One only needs to turn over the coin to discover
the face of the Dude
the incantation of the Clueless
inscribed on the piece is:
“Good for half a KLU”.

The Clue Coin

The Clue Coin

Originally suggested by the Klu Fairy,
this coin holds the potent Powers of Clueness,
something highly coveted by those in the know,
or the “Clued”.

Many of us that have reached an age
where the younger folks look to us
as if we are completely out of touch with reality,
unable to check email,
perhaps understand the “lingo” the Kids are speaking these days.
Personally
when I tell a person
“Thou art Groovy”,
I get the look as if they are telling me
“You haven’t a clue…”

Yes, I have been blessed
(a number of times)
by the Klu by Four of the sacred Klu Fairy,
(and I still have bruises)
but to keep her long lasting wisdom,
this small talisman carried with the rest of my coins
has given me the “pass”
I need so dearly with these younger whipper-snappers.

I would recommend the Dude Coin to any parent who has teenagers
or works with folks who are “missing something”
but don’t know what it is
to carry such a coin to protect One
from the accusation of cluelessness.

Note the coin itself:
see the face,
the slack jaw,
the look of be-befuddlement in the eyes?
(some have suggested it a self portrait;
but just to be clear I do have a mustache…)

the Dude is indeed:
Clueless.
Well,
never fear,
the keeping of this coin
(see back)
is worth half a clue;
you never need feel out of touch
nor not in the know.
Demonstrate to your friends that you have half a clue:
whip it out and show ‘em!

It also comes in a three pack
(even five-pack):
in this manor you can consult the I-Ch’ing with the clue coins,
thus beginning with a clue and a half even before you start.
You can offer the “extras” to your friends
share the wealth of wisdom.
Yea, verily,
the Klue Coin has so many uses and applications
One can never assess them all
– with out a coin that is…

May the Klu Fairy be merciful
and leave relatively painless knots of wisdom on your brain pan!
May the Dude Himself smile down upon you
and give you peace.

Merlin’s Original Awen of Isaac Bonewits

Isaac Bonewits developed renderings of his designs
and sent them to me for a special line of Jewelry.
One of them is the Awen.

The Awen

The Original Bonewits Awen Amulet

In his words:

“The sign of “the Three Rays” is used by members of the United Ancient Order of Druids, the Ancient Order of Druids, the Order of Bards Ovates & Druids, and many other followers of Druidry. It can be seen as symbolizing Sky Father Energy in balance with the Earth Mother energy of the Druid Sigil, as well as any of a thousand other sets of three ideas.”

This version of the Awen is a wreath of oak leaves,
three staves emanating down from three acorns.
The bail from which to hang the amulet:
an oak leaf curled to hold the chain or cord.
On the reverse side of the “signature”:
“Bonewits” and that of the artist:
“Merlin” or Kirk McLaren of Amulets by Merlin.

Through his travels Isaac offered these amulets
with his books and other items;
he even created a special portion of his website
to feature the jewelry.
You may purchase the Awen Amulet and his other designs through my site.
For each piece purchased
Isaac’s surviving Widow
receives a royalty to both help through some difficult times
and encourage efforts to promote good will
and clarity to the world.

his writings and more, you may visit his website.
