Zodiac Amulets

Introducing the new calendar featuring the imagery developed from the Tarot Amulets and Casters of Amulets by Merlin. In the original creation of these pieces, I had envisioned this as a break from the traditional “card” presenting a scene. The Amulets are focused into an almost Iconic form so it may be used in a very tangible “casting forth” if the pieces – “Roll the bones” as it were.

These tarot  images are from the MetaPlace experiment of 2009.  This was original a virtual reality game engine which enabled us to do an on-line “walk through” providing a way to immerse oneself into the concepts.  For the Calender I have enhanced the images and added writings from my Tarot Archives and included images from my Zodiac pieces.

Each month presents the corresponding Tarot Amulet, the Astrological association, and a meditation on the Tarot’s meaning in relation to the Hebrew letter.

Additional assistance in the imagery developed in MetaPlace by Allyn McElrath and Michael Woody.

The Gemini Pisces Amulet was commissioned as a one-of-a-kind, sterling silver piece with the two signs of the zodiac woven together. The symbols are textured with “wind and water” to enhance the design.

In her words:

“This piece is incredibly personal for me. It represents the beauty and duality in a harmonious twin sign. It further symbolizes the deep bonds I have with my husband and also my best friend who are Pisces. This gorgeous amulet is a tangible expression of my identity I now wear daily. Thank you Kirk!”

Inspired by the Rider Deck, this famous tarot symbol represents the solar aspect of creation. The Sun provides light and warmth to our world, it is not surprising that the Star was anthropomorphized with human like qualities. In my article concerning the Sun Amulet in my Tarot series, I described how the concept of a countenance on the sun was considered. The solar globe is quite literally a ball of fire with no human like qualities, yet we see through out various cultures a human face ascribed to it.

The Little Sun Amulet

We do this with most things: we place a human face on things we find strange or incomprehensible; in this way we may begin to relate to it in a way we may understand.

A smiling Solar Face beams down upon us giving light and warmth to all who may receive it. A classic image of spring and summer, beach bunnies and those who acknowledge the Sun God of Old. This rendering of the Sun gently smiles upon us from beyond our reach. The twelve rays represent the zodiac and ringed together to complete the Amulet.

This piece is ¾” in sterling silver: available in gold – prices upon request. To get yours, please visit my Little sun Amulet page.

One of my favorite images is the Centaur. Fantasia illustrates the beautiful creatures celebrating life to the music of Beethoven’s Sixth, they are featured in the Narnia series, Centaurs may be found as characters in Chalker’s Well of Souls series; and of course, they are the noted imagery of Sagittarius: one of the astrological signs noting focus and concentration.

I designed a ring of a Lady Centaur drawing an arrow in her bow and aiming at the stars. By using the ring as a point of focus or reminder, the Centaur gets to the point of the matter, focusing on a specific target, not wavering, ignoring tangents; She sets sights on her goal, draws and fires.

The Centaur Ring

This ring is for those who practice the art of Archery, who wish to concentrate on their bottom line, set their goals and achieve them; it is for those who love Centaurs or simply celebrate their birth in Sagittarius. To order your Centaur ring, please visit my Centaur Ring page.

Yes, we have all heard the clamor about having to re-do the Zodiac. As many experts have stepped up and announced that we need to change everything, I have sat back and had a good laugh. There is no argument about the shift of the constellations around our globe, but changing Astrology?

First, let us consider what these symbols actually represent: the wheel of the year based on the seasons described as pictographs representing both a time of year and a personality trait.

The calender had been divided into seasons: each season described as been segmented into three bands: Cardinal (Activating), Fixed (Solid, grounded), and Mutable (adaptability). A good example of this is Spring: it begins with Aries: busting in like a ram on a mission. Taurus settles in and Spring is in full swing. The the transition to summer begins as Spring rounds it’s last house of Gemini. By looking at the Zodiac, we see a description of our year as the Earth makes it’s journey around the Sun. By watching how the stars move through the sky, it was easy to see correlations between these “months” and the position of the stars to the sun.

Leo Amulet

It is a fascinating thing to observe modern psychology grow and develop. The “hard science” extends from human behavior and conditioning to brain studies and is extremely complex. “Pop” psychology has a tendency to divide people into basic stereotypes: Alpha and Beta. You are either a “dominant” personality or you do what you are told. As we dig deeper we see so many variables (childhood, parenting – or lack of it, income, race) it gets muddy pretty quickly.

Before Jung and Freud, there were few words to describe personality traits unless you relied on Astrology. There we find Twelve “basic” personality types, each cut into a multiple subgroups, degrees of intensity, crossing paths like a kaleidoscope of color. Because Physiologists of the early 20th century had a tendency to look at themselves as Scientists rather than Artists; the “millions of colors” provided in the Astrological palette was shunned rather than embraced. Worse: the community who understood Astrology for what it really is, avoided discussing any of it with those in the Universities.

So, the question come forth, what is it: really?
Astrology is a language which describes the Human condition and has provided a vast “database” of experiences of those who have used it. With this language we can then come to a better understanding as to what is happening and what our choices are. When attempting to discover “the right thing to do” astrologers have calculated “right action” in difficult situations for centuries.

In the old days, an Oracle would learn when you were born and where; but didn’t stop there. More information was needed: who are your parents? What kind of situation are you living in now? The Oracle would see what you were wearing, your jewelry, your food and so on. It was extremely “holistic”. All of this information was then compounded and a prescription of conduct was then prescribed. Astrology was but a small tool in the box. Yes there were specialists, but Dr. John Dee was an exception rather than the rule.

Now, Astrology is treated like a basic computer game: what is your sign? Here is your forecast. When we consult an Oracle, it is usually at a time of crisis and we want answers. Most of us are in a panic and really don’t care how one gets the right answer, we just want it. It reminds me of a story my Father once told me of a woman in his congregation back in Houston in the 50s. She consulted the Bible everyday for her forecast. She would close her eyes and give a prayer, ask her question, open the Book at a random place and point. There on the page would be her answer. “How accurate was this?” I asked him and looked at me in surprise: “Well, most of the time it seemed to work for her, however she did wind up buying a lot of shoes because the Bible told her to do so.” The Bible was not intended to be an Oracle, but it is an amazing thing that we may harness things in this way. Astrology may be applied in many ways, not always as it is intended. However the modern use of Astrology (the newspaper’s “Daily Forecast”) is a shadow compared to it’s actual use and purpose.

So, the Solar System has moved though our galaxy, the orbit of the planet around the sun has given us a different view of the stars but we still have the same seasons: Spring always starts like a Ram making a new door (usually right next to the old one). Should we now change the language, the symbols, the ways we describe our world and ourselves because of the latest media hype about the placement of the Zodiac? Yes, it is a silly question. The forces of nature have remained the same, only our perception of those forces has changed. I will continue to use the Old Language “as it is” to describe my Tarot Amulets and my Zodiac Collection.

However, here is a more serious one:
Astrology holds a mirror for us to see our strengths and weakness. It says “Your are here”, simply a starting line. Oracles ask “You have all of these tools to work within this environment, what do you choose to do?” Possibly the most subversive question offered. It doesn’t say a deity has a plan for you, no Destiny to fulfill, no Fate. “You are in control of your life, what do you choose?”

I have been asked to do this each year for well over a decade: to make a calendar featuring the imagery developed from the Tarot Amulets and Casters. In the original creation of these pieces, I had envisioned this as a break from the traditional “card” presenting a scene. The Amulets are focused into an almost Iconic form so it may be used in a very tangible “casting forth” if the pieces. “Roll the bones” as it were.

After some consideration, I decided to develop images from our work in MetaPlace. I have enhanced the images and added writings from my Tarot Archives and added images from my Zodiac pieces. Each month presents the corresponding Tarot Amulet, the Astrological association, and a meditation on the Tarot’s meaning in relation to the Hebrew letter. Additional assistance in the imagery was developed in MetaPlace by Allyn McElrath and Michael Woody.

Announcing the Second Wall Calender of Amulets by Merlin:

2011 Wall Calender of Amulets by Merlin

The name Astaroth was ultimately derived from a Phoenician goddess Astarte 4000 years ago, similar to Babylon’s Ishtar, and the Sumerian Inanna. Astarte was connected with fertility, sexuality, and war. Her symbols were the lion, horse, sphinx, dove, and the planet Venus symbolized by a star within a circle. Ashtoreth is mentioned in the Torah as the principal goddess of the Sidonians representing the fertility of Nature. The Testament of Solomon mentions Asteraoth (Greek) as an angel, who is opposed to the demon of power.

The Astraroth Amulet

The name “Astaroth” as a male demon is first known from The Book of Abramelin, written in 1458, and quoted in grimoires to this day. Astaroth has also been associated with an arch-demon of the qliphoth (adverse forces) according to later Qabalistic texts.

It is interesting to note here the transformation(like most polytheistic beings, (in particular Goddesses) have been “transformed” into the direct opposite of the original conception. We see this often in human history, the accepted “good” being supplanted by the new politically correct version to conform with the new agenda. The original Goddess Astare of sexuality, fertility and conflict becomes a Male Demon who seduces by means of laziness, vanity, and rationalized philosophies.

By re-examining all of the world’s traditions we find the Monotheistic paths tend to exclude everything (save One) as Evil and we are to avoid them. Other traditions through out the world see races of beings everywhere; some helpful, some harmful but most are unconcerned with us entirely. In modern fiction we see a “reclaiming” of Demons as simply “other beings” rather than Satan’s Minions; a good example is the Golden Compass (Northern Lights) by Philip Pullman. In his tale he describes a world where many people have relationships with Demons as a very mundane arrangement.

The Lesser Key of Solomon or Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis is a 17th century grimoire (book of Shadows), one of the most popular books of demonology. It contains detailed descriptions of spirits and what is needed to invoke and oblige them to do the will of the conjurer. (An extremely un-friendly arrangement. One would think it better to have a relationship of mutual respect rather than making demands on a being much stronger than you!) Referred to in The Lesser Key of Solomon as a very powerful demon, Astaroth teaches mathematical sciences and handicrafts, can make you invisible and lead to hidden treasures, and answers every question formulated to him (choose your words carefully!).

Astrologers, Tarotists and other seekers of wisdom have since chosen a different path with this Being. He(She?) has become a conduit to deeper understanding of what is hidden. The texts of the Lesser Key of Solomon have been interpenetrated with a deeper understanding of the Mysteries. “Hidden Treasure” of the mind and spirit, and seeking the Philosopher’s Stone (the sanctity of one’s Inner Being). As long as one holds themselves in the best of intent, the exchange is positive for all concerned. As soon as one seeks selfishness, the result becomes corrupt.

In the creation of the Astaroth Amulet I have cut into a disk of silver His Seal and mounted a top bail and jump ring. The piece is only 3/4” and easily used as a charm or pendant. This is for those who are readers of the Tarot or other workers of the Oracle. Those who wear this amulet may be honed and well focused for deep insight.

If you wish to learn more about the Astraroth Amulet, please visit the web page featuring the pendant.

A custom “Charm Holder” and necklace.

The Charm Holder

The Charm Holder
A custom necklace
to hold various amulets

After searching “high and low” (as she put it) for several years,
such a thing was not to be found.
Apparently my client had a charm holder made in the ‘70s,
but due to her allergy to gold and the problem of breakage,
she sought a jeweler to re-create the piece.
After sending me a rather blurry image with a written description
I created a rendering fro her approval.
Because of her purposes for the piece
I added the triple moon at the top harnessing a hinge and clasp for the armature to swing out,
change the amulets out as needed and clasp again behind the triple moon shield.
I did not add stones because it would “color” what it is
holding to a narrow spectrum of purpose.

Shown here are three amulets in combination:
the High priestess, Leo and an ancestor skull bead.
This combination holds the vitality and perseverance of Leo,
the qualities of the Akashic amulet of the High Priestess
and the wisdom of the ancestors.
As the bearer of this Charm Holder,
she is able to construct a pattern of influences
needed for a specific purpose
or to develop a matrix of intent
for a period of time
and then reconstruct the holder for other purposes in the future.

Although this piece is a one of a kind,
I can create a charm holder of similar make and construction for you
with your choice of symbol at the top and size of armature.
Custom work is one of my favorite things to create,
so all you need to do is ask.

Capricorn is a Cardinal (initiation, creativity and leadership) Earth (socially acceptable, very polite, prudent, and aroused by sensory stimulation). Capricorn’s house begins with the longest night of the year with the promise of longer days, yet the winter deepens. This conflict is reflected in Capricorn’s qualities.

The Capricorn Amulet

Saturn’s limiting influence of Capricorn is dominate; associated with the confines of Time itself, Capricorn does best when limited to deadlines and delineated spaces and shine under pressure. Capricorns are extremely solid, practical and determined. Even as winter sets in, Capricorn “sees the light at the end of the tunnel” though they deem it nearly unreachable, their determination cannot be thwarted even when faced with insurmountable odds. Thus they become extremely dependable both as workers and managers. Because they perceive everything as “weaker” than themselves, they trust little that they themselves did not set in motion, they test and question everything, thus they can become tedious when faced with uncertainty. Their powers of manipulation have given them the phrase “I Use” for everything from objects, people and situations.

The Capricorn Amulet reflects the Capricorn’s essence of fierce determination and drive to complete their goals; solid Earth texture framed in a solid circle of delineation.

This amulet is for both the Capricorn sun and moon signs: The Sun signs are those of the Zodiac houses under which you are born: December 22 – January 19/20, or if you are more concerned with your moon sign, the house the moon occupied while you were born. It may also be used as an amulet should you wish to emphasize the qualities of Capricorn in your life, actions, position in your community or home; perfect for those who are analysts, quality control, advisers, managers and workers of all kinds.

Sagittarius is Mutable (flexibility, service-providing and expansion) Fire (liveliness, energy, passion, enthusiasm, valor and action) and is principally aware of and concerned with humanitarian and existential concerns. The House of Sagittarius is between the time when the veil is the thinnest and moves toward the longest night of the year.

The Sagittarius Amulet

Ruled by the planet Jupiter (Jove may be envisioned by a Sheriff with a tin star: happily providing peace and stability with good humor, yet ever vigilant to keep things in order with a serious threat of punishment) Sagittarians are optimistic and freedom-loving, Jovial and good-humored, honest and straightforward, intellectual and philosophical. However if provoked can be blindly optimistic, hasty, superficial, tactless and agitated. Their one tendency is their brutal honesty providing them with the tools of a good sounding board. Their greatest dislike is falsehood and simply cannot tolerate deceit or the people that use it as a weapon to get what they want. Their first response is to destroy what they perceive as a danger to others or mark it as “off limits” to the unwary. They are honorable, honest, trustworthy, truthful, generous and sincere. They are usually on the side of the underdog in society they will fight for a cause they believe to be just, and are prepared to be rebellious.

The Sagittarius Amulet holds the classic symbol of the Drawn Arrow, derived from the primal concept of the House: “I Perceive”. One of the most common phrases of a Sagittarius is: “Get to the point!” The amulet is framed in a deeply carved circle and textured with fire.

This amulet is for both the Sagittarius sun and moon signs: The Sun signs are those of the Zodiac houses under which you are born: November 22 – December 21, or if you are more concerned with your moon sign, the house the moon occupied while you were born.

It may also be used as an amulet should you wish to emphasize the qualities of Sagittarius in your life, actions, position in your community or home; perfect for those who are in Law enforcement and the judiciary branch of society, leaders of all kinds, trouble shooters, warriors and councilors.
